Century m74 replacement furniture question
Hello everyone.
I had my ak 74 (century m74) for a while now and just got a wood furniture for it. The other day i was trying to swap it out and ran in to some problems.
I'm don't know much about ak's yet but willing to learn :)
Here is first thing.
My wood set, upper hand guard, came without metal sleeve for piston. and dinking around with my stock set i was a little afraid to mess it up and take metal off. So i was wondering if i can just purchase that part separately and install it on wood grip. (see picture)
also i undid two screws to take off butt stock but it didnt want to come off at all. i was trying to wiggle it and pull it and nothing... just wouldn't move. ANy advice on how to take it off without scratching, bending or breaking anything?
thanks guys!
You can buy that part for cheap at Apex guns. If your old upper handguard has the metal piece, you can pry it off no problem and use it. As far as removing the buttstock, make sure all screws are out and then use a wooden dowl and a hammer to knock it loose. Put the wooden dowel on the face of the wood stock inside the receiver. You can also use a rubber mallet to hit the top and bottom sides of the stock OVER AND OVER until it comes loose... It takes some time but it will come free. If it refuses, you need to clamp the reciever in a padded vise and go to work with dowel and hammer and/or mallet...
I had a similar issue taking the stock out of Nikolina. I removed the pistol grip and it's nut and used a spacer and a screwdriver to push the stock out.
As to the handguard, do you mean the gas tube? The 2nd edition of Book of the AK-47 has a tutorial, but it;s actually really simple. Gain access to a vice and use a rag for padding. Put the old gas tube/HG assembly in and gently tighten the vice. Get an adjustable spanner and twist the end that locks into the rear sight block. The gas tube will rotate 180 degrees inside the handguard and come loose. For installation, reverse the process. Some sanding on the wood may be necessary and may require some fiddling to get the handguard even with the lower.
Perfect!
Thank you!
Alright! I wanted to re-finish wood to give it dark cherry color. So I'll do some fitting then.
Thank you guys for your help!
double post.... Sorry....
Did you get the buttstock out? What stain are you going to use? Do not forget to post pics when you finish...

Not yet. I tried it this weekend and I wont be able to do anything for next couple of weeks due to work schedule. I'm not sure yet on what I'm going to use. I saw lots of pictures here and other forums of russian ak's with redish-brown color, like cherry color wood, and think it would look good on ak74. I still need to strip my wood and treat/color it. But before I'm gonna do it I'll need to fit it make sure its ok with my rifle.
sometimes the upper HG doesn't require the tension spring. Try it 1st, it may be tight enough to not require one.
