 Question on AMD -65's

Hey guys,

This being my first post, I hope I dont annoy anyone with my question. I've know quite abit about the world of Ar's and what not but Ak's are foreign (pun intended) to me. Ive looked around a bit at the variants of this style of rifle and have narrowed it down to the AMD-65 that I want to drop money for.

Anyway, so Ive noticed that some of the receivers are marked for Tennessee, but Im looking for a genuine Hungarian model preferably, and was curious as to what markings can let me know they are genuine.

I also noticed while reading through this section that there may be an SBR issue at hand, and I'm in no mood, or financial position to deal with said issue.

Thanks in advance
William

Here's what I have seen posted before on AMD-65's. I was looking into getting one so I did some research but haven't got one yet.

The FEG receivers are the real Hungarian ones which were single stack receivers that were opened up to accept double stack mags by TGI in Tennesse.

I have also seen where some people have said that TGI bought the rights to use the FEG stamping and that the receivers are made in the USA but stamped FEG.

Ahh ic....

Well either way I think I will get one, I havent heard of them having any issues or read of any serious ones here...and as long as it isnt say century arms I think I wont have to worry about anything.

Thanks for the info.

I was in the same boat as you (couple of weeks ago), I am not AK-literate, after some reading I also decided to buy an amd-65 from TGI. Two days later, walked into the gun shop I frequent and he had 2, TGI amd-65s with the FEG receivers for $400 dollars each.
I now own 2 amd-65s, Its a good shooting gun, chrome lined barrels(i believe), not very accurate though. They both work well with the cheap tapco magazines. I bought them for SHTF back pack rifles, but they are really fun to shoot.

TGI = Tennesse Gun Right?

If so then I will probably pick up the one with the tennesse stamped reciever....I dont care much if it says FEG or not...since IIRC TGI has the rights to stamp FEG on them now. Good too see they dont have any reliability problems.

J&G has the AMD-65's with the FEG receiver.
http://www.jgsales.com/product_info.php/rifles/ak-47-and-rpk-rifles/p/hungarian-amd-65-ak-47-rifle%2C-feg-receiver%2C-w-side-folding-stock-/cPath/209_214/products_id/3115

I think the ones that CAI has uses DC Industries for the receiver.

I think the AMDs from J&G are Century built. I don't think they are Hungarian FEG stamped. Correct me if I am wrong on this.

I called J&G and they said Century is the importer and they are built with the original FEG receiver.

'I also noticed while reading through this section that there may be an SBR issue at hand'

What? As long as you don't remove the welded-on barrel extension/muzzle brake, there will be no issue. The gun comes from the so-called factory 922r compliant and with a perfectly legal 16" barrel. There are two kinds of barrels - the original 12" barrel with extension/brake welded on, and a generic AK barrel cut back to about 13.5" with the original muzzle brake welded on to make 16". There are two receivers in use that I know of - the NODAK SPUD and the FEG SA2000M. In both cases that will be the legal name of the gun - you won't see 'AMD-65' on the transfer papers. Additionally, most of them now have the grey plastic pistol grips because everyone ran out of the pretty wood ones.

Would an AMD with the DC Industries receiver be something you would always pass on? Reason I ask is there is one for sale here locally at a decent price.

When you get to see the AMD look on the left side it should say made in Hungary. Every part of my TGI AMD-65 has the exact same full or the last three S/Ns stamped on them. receiver/ receiver cover /bolt carrier and bolt. This item is important if it's and original complete Hungarian FEG AMD-65.

I purchased my AMD65 from AIM a few months ago when they still had them in stock. It's a TGI import using a FEG receiver and original barrel with the extended muzzle break welded on. The FEG receiver is the SA2000M with the magwell opened up. It also has the gray plastic grips which I will swap out with Ironwood grips. Everything is original except for the FCG, and muzzle break. It requires the use of a US mag for compliance. Quality is good for the price I got it ($399 plus shipping). I wish I had bought 2 at that price.

No, I wouldn't pass on it because I don't know anything good or bad about a 'DC receiver'. The main thing about the receivers is who finished them, not who made the flats, although I have to tell you that the FEG receivers are very well-made. I wanted to put a sling swivel on mine near the back end of the receiver on the LH side where the original loop is, so I had to drill a hole. I took a brand new Bosch Titanium-coated bit and started drilling - the receiver is heat-treated and was so hard I almost didn't get through! Once, on another FEG I bought in 1995, I changed out the stock. I got impatient with the fitting process and forced the stock into the receiver, which slightly bulged both sides. Years later I put yet another stock in it, and when I removed the old one the receiver returned to flat, with no looseness of the rear block. This time I fitted it right. Those FEG receivers are very tough.

Another one to consider are the ones built by High Standard..............they are more expensive, but the ones I have seen are very nice, and you can have the original barrel or a new US hard chromed one
