New TGI AMD 65 & Looking for Some Modification Suggestions.
Just picked this up today and it appears to be very solid and well built. My local dealer had 3 TGI builds in stock and they all looked great but this one looked a little better then the rest.
The folding stick locks up solid and the bolt is very smooth and the finish looks great.
I'm thinking I want to do UTG Hand Guard Rail and I was wondering if these were good. I have a M.I. rail on my Draco but figured I'd save a few bucks if these are just as good plus I like how the top rail is a bit longer. Any reccomendations with this one or pictures?
Also is there a better choice for a flash hider that I can have tacked welded on that will still be long enough to be compliant?
Here's a couple pictures:

i had a UTG on my first AMD and it made it extremely front heavy. i'd find a poly one w/ a heat shield. as far as FH, if you run a 2" extension you have alot of options. if not, look into a tantal brake. the original "snake brake" is very effective in controlling recoil and muzzle climb but it's crazy loud. keep in mind that once you weld a device onto your barrel it can no longer be used toward your 922 parts count so don't be afraid to buy foreign brakes.
Some great info thanks.
I don't think I will mind the weight to much the M.I. is on a Draco pistol and specs show it as 1 oz more then the UTG. I'm not a fan of poly rails. I just ordered it though and worst comes to worst I don't like it and take it off.
Is there somewhere I can buy a 2" extension?
Thanks again.
i also had a laser and a flashlight on the front of mine so that was prolly the cause of the weight.
I recommend replacing the wire stock with an AR15 type stock, I got mine from krebscustoms.com, they will the adapter you need to add a buffer tube and collapsible stock.
Like the other guy said a front rail on the rifle will make it front heavy. Midwest Industries has a rail for most AK platforms built by MI/US PALM, don't know how much they weight but they are reasonably priced.
I modified my safety/dust cover so that I can lock the bolt back when the gun is not being used for safety reasons, cool concept but not 100% necessary.
Replace the pistol grip, I removed my front vertical grip.
I also rapped para cord around my gas tube so that I will not burn my fingers if I accidentally touch it while firing. If the cord gets hot you can always pure some water on the cord and it will stay cooler for longer.
There are many different options for the compensator, I removed mine and replaced it with a AK74 style comp, at least for now, mind you if you replace the factory comp you need to either replace it with something that will make the barrel 16 inches or longer or short barrel your rifle.
I'm now trying to fix the front tower b/c mine, like many AMD's, has a canted front sight and it makes the gun very inaccurate at distances.
So basically I have replaced everything in some sort of way and only kept the barrel and receiver to factory.
Like most guns you'll spend a lot of money trying to figure out what you like and what works best for your application
Good luck!
Stock riser from

I have since changed the rear grip to an US Palm grip. I am thinking of switching the front grip to wood...

The cheek riser is not fun to install but it sure is nice. I don't think I could recommend it enough.
As for the UTG I think it is a bit bulky but it works so well for the price on these that I can' imagine not having it on my AMD65. I used a CAA folding grip as it makes reloads really clean and easy for me and it just feels good. As you know there are about 100 options for a front grip.

That is no lie
I have to disagree. It took me all of 5 minutes to install and was worth every penny. If you have any problems, call or email the guy who makes the risers. He is a real AK guru and can walk you through it or just about any other AK-related issue.
I love the riser and could not be happier. Its simple and solves a real problem. YMMV
Or you can do what I did by adding a rail on the already there lower heat shield. Add a Krebs offset mount and whatever VFG you want.
Some great help here. Thanks.
I ordered the stock adapter from http://www.amd65tech.com/ as recommended.
I have also added the following parts:
Ergo grip
UTG rail
D&D light mount with Surefire light.
Magpul foregrip.
I also ordered the sling loop from amd65tech
Once those and the sling are attached I will only have one thing left to do and that's replace the muzzle brake.
I noticed today after shooting the brake started to have a tiny bit of movement where the extension connects to the barrel in front of the sight.
I'm thinking that Ricks Muzzle brake could be the ticket as a repleacement: http://ak47brakes.ricksmuzzlebrakesandgunstuff.com/index.htm
If my measurements are correct I should be able to use his 4 1/2" muzzle brake if I tack weld it on. Can anyone confirm that this will keep my length above or at 16"? Or do I need the 5 1/4" model?
I've included a picture of the rifles updates along with another picture showing which weld is loose. I'm assuming that if I break this weld it is threaded underneath and I can just screw on and tack weld the Ricks Muzzle brake on? Or is the extension pinned on and is the barrel not threaded underneath?
Thanks
