Options for a muzzle break or flash hider on a SAR-2

I'm wondering if anyone knows what options are out there for mounting a muzzle break or flash hider on my old SAR-2. Its an older 2002-2003 model that has no threads on the barrel or muzzle break attachment on the FSB. Its my range fun gun/beater and I dont want to sink a ton into it. Should have bought the Romanian FSB and 74 style break years ago when they were available and cheap. As it stands now, when I shoot it, the cleaning rod jumps forward after a few shots since the muzzle break isnt there to stop it moving forward.

Or should I sell it and get a newer 74 style beater gun?

Your options for threading the barrel (and in turn what devices can be used) depend on the diameter of the barrel at the muzzle.
If you haven't measured it, I suggest you do that.

The SAR 2 was never threaded nor meant to be.

KVAR has the correct front sight block to replace the one on it now. CNC Warrior has a 22mm muzzle brake that should screw right onto the Romanian sight block.(The threads for the brake are made onto the sight block)

Though the break is not 100% correct for a Romanian gun, it gets you set up and if you want you can contact Chris at AK USA and get a correct brake for it ( I think?)

So for a little over $100.00 you can be set up.

Thanks, its been awhile since I checked out KVAR, years ago the Romanian FSB with threads was fairly cheap, but never bought one then. Went back later when thinking of swapping and the FSB were more expensive and in/out of stock. Add to it that the Romanians used a proprietary thread size made it worse. FSB out of stock, muzzle break in stock, repeat, change components, repeat.

I have a basic work shop (ok its a work bench and a shit load of tools from my dad), how easy to knock the FSB pins out and swap to threaded FSB with new pins. Would like to avoid canted FSB, as a monkey may have put my SAR-2 together, but he wasnt drunk and the FSB is straight.

I'm going thru the same deal. Here is what I found out.
KVAR FSB, AK167 $64.19
KVAR PLUNGER PIN/SPRING AK205 $10.00
KVAR MOUNTING PINS AK025B $1.61 EA.
CNCWARRIOR 22MM AK74 BRAKE $26.99 THIS IS CHEAP VERSION,NON CHROME LINED.CANNOT MOUNT BAYO WITH THIS BRAKE,TOO SHORT.
Only other 22mm brake avail:
AK-103.COM ROMY 22MM CHROMED AK74 BRAKE.THIS IS THE CORRECT ONE TO BUY.$85.00 PLUS SHIPPING.
If you don't have a press to get FSB off, you'll need to send it to a smith. APPROX.$100.00
ALSO,ON THE KVAR FSB,ITEM AK167, IT IS NOT DRILLED FOR THE PLUNGER PIN/SPRING.
BOTH MY SAR2'S BARREL MEASURES .512" CANNOT THREAD BARREL.TALKED TO JEFF AT CNCWARRIOR, THE ONLY DIE THAT CAN BE USED IS A M13X1R.H. WHICH THERE ARE NO MUZZLE BRAKES FOR.
HERE'S IS WHAT I'M GOING TO DO, AND HERE IS WHAT I FOUND OUT.
INSTEAD OF PUTTING ANOTHER APPROX. $200.00 INTO A GUN THAT IS NOT WORTH IT.
I TOOK A STANDARD $10.00 AK 762X39 14L.H. REVERSE THREADS AK74 MUZZLE BRAKE AND SLID IT ON THE BARREL OF MY SAR2.IT WAS TIGHT AND ALMOST WANTED TO THREAD ON THE BARREL.TRIED ANOTHER BRAKE ON THE OTHER SAR2 I HAVE.THIS ONE SLIPPED ON A LITTLE LOOSER.I'M GOING TO TAKE THE $10.00 BRAKE AND HAVE MY FRIEND TAC WELD IT,VERY NEATLY, AND STRAIGHT OF COURSE.I can't put a bayonet on the rifles because of no lug,it can be done very cheaply, but have not done it yet,but fiqured out how to do it.
HOPE THIS HELPS,SAVE YOURSELF ALOT OF MONEY,YOU'LL NEVER GET BACK IF YOU SELL THE SAR.OR, YOU CAN JUST SELL THE SAR, AND GET A RIFLE FOR MORE MONEY WITH ALL THE FEATURES.
Get the cheap muzzle brake, and weld it on.
DONE!
[IF YOU DECIDE TO SELL THE SAR,I WOULD LIKE FIRST DIBS.HAVE CASH,AND FFL READY FOR QUICK TRANSFER]

I don;t know about "the not being worth it" part. To me it would be.

Those SAR 2 rifles are nice rifles and are good shooters for sure. The front sight base thats on there is no problem to remove. Take a dremel and cut the base almost all the way through. ( on the bottom ) Not all the way mind you. Take a broad point punch and a few taps and the thing will split. Remove junk front sight post. Chuck up your new front sght base and drill your holes. Get things lined up and instead of the solid pins for the base I used stainless steel roll pins! That worked like a charm. A littel fabrication on your part and you can make your own plunger and use another roll pin. Spring is easy to get from hardware store. Piece of cake to do. Did it two times with no ill effects. SAR 2 and a SAR 3. Kind of fun actually.

The point I was trying to make was why take a $450.00 rifle, and add approximate $200.00 in parts to it.You can put all that money towards a better rifle.
Why would you destroy the FSB? You could of taken them off the rifle,[why you need a press], and sold them.

Thats my conundrum. The SAR-2 shoots well and the only thing I did to it was strip the stock down and oil it. The lack of a muzzle break allows the cleaning rod to jump forward and its annoying. I like traditional looking ak's, so the cleaning rod missing is kind of like a SKS lacking a bayonet, it functions fine but just looks wrong. The only things I dont like about the SAR-2 is the lack of a muzzle device and the lack of heat shields in the hand guards. But to correct these two things I am almost over half of what I spent on the rifle in 2003.

Sar-1, 2, & 3 rifles are getting hard to find.

If you like the gun, it's worth investing in it.

I still have my Sar-1 I bought in 2001. I have changed the stocks on it at least 5 times.
I had Krebs Custom (back when they did custom work) completely refinish the gun and thread the barrel.

The gun is still one of my favorites and is currently wearing a refinished set of G stocks.

I've owned & built other AK's but the Sar is keeper.
