VEPR .308 wear and maintenance information?

I am looking at getting a VEPR .308 as my first rifle, but have a couple of questions about handling and taking care of it. I have read quite a bit, but have not found a lot of information about this particular rifle on the topic other than a couple of personal accounts (which I am not sure are true of not).

- What are general do's and don'ts?
- How fast can I expect to shoot it before the accuracy starts deteriorating?
- How fast can I shoot it without causing extra wear on the barrel or other parts of the rifle?
- How often should I clean the rifle?
- How does do these things compare to the .223 caliber of the same rifle?

Would appreciate any answers, since I am pretty much a newbie at this :)

- What are general do's and don'ts? At heart it's an AK. You can treat it like one, it won't break like fine china.
- How fast can I expect to shoot it before the accuracy starts deteriorating? Don't know, I use both of mine as a DMR-type rifle.

- How often should I clean the rifle? I'm OCD about my rifles, they get a complete cleaning with every use. Certainly not necessary however.
- How does do these things compare to the .223 caliber of the same rifle? Never owned a .223 version.

Would appreciate any answers, since I am pretty much a newbie at this :)

so you found a couple of personal accounts of people owning super veprs, and your not sure of their accounts to be true or not. what are you unsure of to be true or not?

Agreed with above, it's an AK. You are literally buying a semi-auto LMG with politically correct stocks on it. The barrel is designed to last literally tens of thousands of rounds before falling out of spec. Again as an AK, unless you send it to Rifle Dynamics for the anal-retentive fitting and truing services, cleaning will pretty much be an asthetics issue, unless you put corrosive ammo through it. As far as comparing to the .223, the barrels for the 30 and 22 caliber have the same OD. So the .223 one might be a leeeetle bit more accurate, but you are still buying an accurate rifle.

Well, one example was that you could shoot a 5.56 101 or 7.62 103 kalashnikov without worrying too much about overheating and prematurely wearing out the barrel. On the other hand, with the .308, you should shoot around 4 or 5 rounds per minute. How accurate is that?

sorry bout that, thought i saw super vepr somewhere on your title thread i probably need glasses. thats why i responded, as the super vepr is more towards a hunting rifle than the one in question.

- What are general do's and don'ts? -Do anything you want, that's legal, except let bore cleaner touch the paint.

- How fast can I expect to shoot it before the accuracy starts deteriorating? -How much practice/training have you had? -Accuracy vs, speed is mainly a function of the shooter, not the gun. That said, there is more recoil in any .308, so it may take longer to get back on target. -

How fast can I shoot it without causing extra wear on the barrel or other parts of the rifle? -prob. about 3 mag dumps and then you will be in the range of causing excess barrel ware (simular ot ANY military style rifle) Unlike AR style weapons however, you will only be heating up the barrel and gas tube, and not really causing any extra bolt/carrier ware.

- How often should I clean the rifle? -anytime it's wet (rain/h20), if you shot corrosive ammo for some crazy reason, or you want to make it look pretty. -I've shot thousands of rounds without cleaning, and had no effect on accuracy or functionality, again, it's not dumping carbon on the bolt like an AR
.
-

How does do these things compare to the .223 caliber of the same rifle? -Bigger boom, otherwise about the same in all aspects.... (I have both, the .223 is cheaper to shoot and has less recoil, but the .308 does more work).

Hope that helps some... I would ALWAYS suggest to ANYONE (who can legally own one) to buy a VEPR if you have the chance and $$$. If you regret it, call a pshyciatrist!

P.S.: There may be other guns out there that do one thing better, but I've yet to find any that have as good of a combination of all aspects/overall value as a VEPR. -Even with the recent price increases due to limited supply.

Nice looking receivers and heavy duty barrels and parts, but is there a decent AK gunsmith that currently does MODS on these rifles? Like Krebs did in the past, i.e. replace the hideous thumbhole wooden stocks, which have no business on a tactical rifle, with black plastic ones, or install flash suppressors.? Similar of the mods you can see on Robinson web site, with ventilated furniture, milled out plastic buttstocks. The furniture is what turns me off on these rifles, it just does not look right. Okay for a hunting rifle, but how many Vepr owners hunt with them? Also, where do you get original spare parts like firing pin and extractor? You can buy new .308 original Russian mags, but the rest seems unobtainable.

There is apparently a new tactical version of the Super Vepr II out in Russia, with pretty good looking black plastic stock, but of course Atlantic Arms would have to import it with the regular wooden stock...

Besides hunting, the thumbhole stocks do very well in a DMR-type rifle, which is how my .308 Veprs are set up. Personally, I like the thumbhole stocks.

The extra parts for my first .308 Vepr is a second .308 Vepr. I may buy a third.

I threaded the barrel of my first .308 myself to 5/8-24 and installed a brake. It's very easy to do. My second .308 has a Molot factory installed flash hider.

I use my .308 Veprs for hunting and I know I'm not alone.

Comparing the .308 version to the .223 version would be comparable to the results of the .30 caliber M-14 and the .223 caliber AR-15 being shot through 3/4 inch plywood. The .223 AR-15 may penetrate the wood, whereas the .30 caliber M-14 would penetrate both the wood and the person hiding behind it, and may even keep going.
