gun belt
Normally I carry an LC9 and it's not an issue, but on occasion I like to carry a larger.....heavier gun, while complaining about the larger firearms pulling my drawers down to a friend he strongly suggested a gun belt. He said they offer much more support than a standard belt when you add the weight of a firearm. I have several questions, do they really make THAT big of a diffrence and if so what are you using/have used and do you reccomend it?
thanks in advance!
Yes it makes a difference. You know when you wear a belt for a while and then take it off you can notice that at the back of the belt it has slight U-shape to it? Good gun belts don't do that. They are stiff enough as to not bend or bow.
Lots of discussion on this, probably the most common topic in carry issues.
Depends on whether you want leather or kydex. Both belts I have are $40 belts. I leather Aker B21 with a plastic stiffener between 2 layers of leather and a Wilderness 5-stitch. Both 1.5" belts. They both work great. People look at spending $40-100 on a belt and wince. They will last 5x as long (at least) as a $20 belt from a big box store.
The Belt Man makes some of the best leather belts but they are a bit more spendy, and worth it in my opinion.
You know, I didn't think they would make much of a difference, until I bought one! I carry a full size HK USP .40 and it made a huge difference. I have 2 belts from
The Beltman. These are great quality. I have 2 of the 1.5 inch bullhide belts.

Looks like you typed a bit faster than I did.

A proper gun belt is an ABSOLUTE must. For a leather belt, The Beltman is great, and so are the kydex reinforced leather belts from Comp-tac. For a non-leather belt, I would recommend a Wilderness Instructor's belt.
Pick one.
beltman
wilderness
Ares Ranger
Conptac
countless others...
+1 to what others have said about a GUN belt being a MUST have. You want your firearm where you put it ..every time.
I wear Galco Contour, The Beltman and Wilderness-all with stiffeners..mine are all 1.5"..only because that is my belt loop size.
DOUBLE TAP..deleted
I was also in your situation a while back.. I carry a glock 36, and while it's not huge.. it's much heavier than an LCP/LC9. Regular belts tend to stretch and bend allowing the firearm to "flop" or tilt to the side. I have a gut and having a gun belt is a must, I don't want my fat pushing the gun into view if it doesn't have to be.
What's also amazing, is once you get used to a gun belt, regular belts feel flimsy and weird, even when you're not carrying at the waist band. I tend to wear a gun belt even when carrying at shoulder or ankle. They'll keep your pants up and then some.. I think mine had some obnoxious 300# weight rating if I were to ever use it as a rapelling / climbing belt..
Gun belts make all the difference in the world. The best holster won't perform properly without a stiff gun belt. For leather The Beltman is excellent, but I prefer the Wilderness Original Instructors Belt and wear it 95% of the time. I rarely tuck in my shirt.
Oops
I have been using Don Hume belts for years. 1.5 Leather Heavy Duty.

thanks for all your help!
Never carried a gun without a belt made for it. I've been rocking a beltman for 5 years.
Looper has been around my waist for 8 years and I cannot imagine one that is better!
rgleather
you will thank me. everything you could ever want from a gun belt, double stitching and solid brass buckle
oh yeah and only $57 unless you are a fatass
I wore out a duty belt made by 5.11 while using a CompTac Spartan Slide for my M&P 9c. Super stiff and cost only $40 or so.
I've since switched to the following method...
IWB holster belt
Works great.
I have been looking at the Ares Ranger Belt and I was wondering if you have to undo the velcro everytime you put it on? It doesn't look like the Buckle would fit through the pant loops.

From what I've read there is no velcro on it, but you do have to detach the webbing from the buckle to get the belt off in most cases.

There is no velcro... But the buckle is generally too big to fit through loops. Its not REALLY too big, its just much easier to remove the female side of the buckle to put on/take off the belt. No sweat really, but not exactly ideal. That said, the belt is great for carrying and is light years ahead of the cheap leather job it replaced.

+1.
It takes me a couple of minutes to pull the female buckle off, feed the belt through the belt loops and thread the buckle back on but its well worth it. I carry a Glock 19 and at least one spare mag daily, and the Ares makes it as comfortable as an actual duty belt as far as support and lack of sag goes.

Beltman or A&G gun leather, I've been very pleased with both belts.
Yes it makes that big of a difference.
I have a Belt man and a Tucker
The Belt Man is a Good belt
But The Tucker is a Great belt
Wilderness 5 stitch will last a long long time
I've had a Beltman belt for years now. It's a great leather belt. Recently I wanted something that I could cinch down a little tighter which is hard to do with leather. I picked up an Ares Gear Ranger Belt. I have been very pleased with it so far.
Yes, they do make that big of a difference.
My personal preference is the Ranger belt from Ares Gear. It is by far the best belt I have owned, not only is it great for every day carry but it also excels in a training environment.

Yup. Had mine for a few months now. Wearing it right now, as a matter of fact. Love it. It does everything from every day carrying to competition very well. I can vouch for the every day stuff, and Chris Costa can tell you about training / competing environments

Hey guys Im going to get an Ares Ranger for inside IWB and OWB carry for a G19. The belt size ranges are pretty wide range. I dont want a lot of extra material to tuck. Who IWB's with this belt and how much larger in size did you go or did you middle of the road it?

I'm at the larger end of one of their sizes, but I still had a few inches left for a gun IWB. I have less than an inch of material to cinch down when carrying, so it works quite well for me. (Better not gain any weight

) Give yourself about 1 1/2 inches for a gun IWB, over your normal pants size, and order whatever size range fits.

I wear a 32" waist when not carrying IWB, and 34" when I am. Got the large, and while i can make it work, if I had it to do over again I'd get the medium. I tuck a lot of extra under.
As others have said, it does make a big difference. When I first started carrying I used a leather gun belt from Don Hume. It's a good belt and held the gun, a full size USP.45, pretty well. I upgraded to an Ares Ranger belt shortly after and it was even better. I would recommend the Ranger without hesitation.
I love my Ares Ranger but I have been wanting something more casual. Looks like the Beltman is getting an order soon!

I have Galco belts in black and brown and are pretty casual in my opinion. I wear them even when I'm not CCW.
