Thinking of going skiing today.
My ccw is a G19 in an MTAC (this is currently the only holster i have at my present location)
Anyone else carry while on the slopes? how does it work?
I am concerned about the pistol coming loose if i take a nasty spill.

Personally I would skip that one. I have come to the conclusion that if I want to enjoy certain things in life I cannot be armed all the time. Carry a pocket knife or some fox spray. Too many chances in which I wold worry about the gun and definitely my body during a fall.

That's kinda how I'm feeling with this one, at least with my current holster choice (need to get a shoulder rig). I am worried about the gun falling out, because of that i am concerned about carrying condition 1, and i am concerned that if i did fall, it might hurt me (fall on my hip, and become old at 21). But seeing as all my friends are busy, I might wait till tomorrow and go after classes are out.

That's a big one. I'm 24, and have taken a spill with my xd in a minotaur spartan, much like the mtac, and it hurts like hell. I thought I had broken my hip, but it was just badly bruised. Would NOT want to fall on it skiing.

On top of that, this is an intense activity with a gun in a holster that does not have a retention device. Losing it in the snow is a very real possibility. And in snow, it may get covered up pretty quickly. Who knows who will find it if you do, hopefully not a child.

Personally, I'd skip carrying altogether on this one. I think you'll actually be safer without it, considering the possible risks involved. Happy skiing!

I've carried many times on the slopes with my M&P 9c and the smartcarry.com holster that I customized a bit.

Wrestling with the kids, Golf, riding bikes, shorter runs.... No problems there either.

The only time I can't wear this set up is during rigorous workouts. The work out shorts just aren't enough to keep the gun from tumbling out during some of the jumping and twisting drills.

For this type of carry, the threespeed holster has the correct shape right out of the box.

Thats one of those places that id skip honestly- and I tend to carry everywhere.
Not only is it going to hurt like a bitch when you go down (hey, happens to the best of us), ive seen exactly one altercation that nearly came to blows in the 10 or so years that ive been skiing.
You dont have people on the slopes going around looking to rob or kill people like your average public place. Or thus has been my experiences skiing in New Mexico and Colorado.

Im even trying to think of how youd carry. Deffinately not on the waist in a conventional holster. Plus, how long is it going to take you to get to your sidearm with all of your cold weather gear on? You could probably get away with a J frame or a mouse gun in your pocket.

You need a Mosin.

Don't bother. Seriously.

Certain things you have to weigh the risks. I'm all for regular carry, but when you weigh the risks, which does it balance in favor of?
1. Getting mugged on the mountain
2. Falling, losing your gun or getting hurt because of it

One time I ate it on the pavement on my way home on my longboard. I had a gun shaped bruise on my butt for a week. I don't carry and ride anymore unless I've got it stuffed in my backpack... but having it in a packpack kind of defeats the purpose of concealed carry.

Bad idea.

For starters, I probably would have shot the French snowboard punk who blatantly ran over me at Breck last season.

Seriously, I took a bad spill on an icy Michigan slope a few years ago with a small bourbon flask in my chest pocket. Lucky I did not break a rib or two. I carried a nasty black bruise on my chest for the next two weeks that was shaped exactly like the outline of my flask.

I've been carrying every day I've skied this winter- 5, 6 days a week. admittedly, it's all backcountry. just got back from about 6 miles in the mountains behind my house. I use a military style cordura flap holster that is on my pack waistband. gun is usp c 45.
I realize that this thread is about area skiing, and I wouldn't bother to carry in that situation.
modern polymer framed guns with modern finishes are impervious to the elements.
in my case the gun is to keep wolves and mountain lions from bothering my dog. tracks of both are common within a mile of the house. obviously, this is a special case.
after 40 years I don't fall much. combination of experience and conservative decision making.

I used to hitchhike up the mountain to ski when I was in college and didn't have a car. (it's amazing how quickly you can get a ride when you're carrying skis). I used an IWB holster with a thumb break, carried behind the hip. The gun was more for the rides up and down the mountain, and really I should have just stashed it in a locker when I got there. But I didn't. It was uncomfortable to land on, but it was not situated on a bone. Rather, it was behind the hip bone. That, and going down in powder is different than going down on ice.

I would highly recommend getting something not with a blued finish. Something with a Glock-like finish is a better choice.

I put a Kahr PM9 in a pocket holster in my outside breast pocket.

Condition 3 though just incase I have a bad spill. But it's in such a position that it'd be hard to fall on unless I was riding some rails (which I don't do).

This is what I do except mine is condition 1. It is also how I carry when I ride my motorcycle.

J-Frame in a pocket. And the only reason I do it is because it's far better than leaving it unattended in a car. You're really highly unlikely to have a lethal force encounter on the hill; even at Vail . A G19 would be a PITA to carry skiing other than in a Fanny-Pack; and it's one of the only times a guy could get away with it !
