On mine I abrasive blasted the slide and the glass beaded the slide. Just remove the black then the glass bead gives the stainless steel a nice satin finish.

I am going to assume the other two posters did the same and that is the actual stainless steel of the shied naturally showing through.

The black coating is not the Melonite. The Melonite is a clear metal treatment that is actually in the metal. Plus all M&P pistols slides are manufactured out of Stainless Steel. Nothing Bubba about it.
