I had a local gunsmith swap out the ambi safety on my Springfield Loaded 1911 and now the slide won't stay locked back with an empty mag in the well. Before I make the hour drive, any thoughts on what might cause this?
That's a new one to me.
I'm interested in hearing from some more experienced folks.
My first guess, without seeing pics, would be that the somehow the safety is contacting the slide somewhere.
Nothing on the safety is going to cause this. I'd try another mag or two and inspect the slide release lever where it contacts the mag follower before I'd make an hour drive.
Yeah, did the smith swap out your slide stop or something, maybe so that the finish on it matched the finish on your new non-ambi safety..?

Not to my knowledge––I supplied the safety, and they only charged me for the work to swap that out.

I think it
could.
Here's my guess, take it for what it's worth:
If the new safety isn't fit or machined properly, or if it has a different contour, it could put added tension on the plunger tube spring, and therefore the slide stop. If it is binding the slide stop and not allowing it to rise under the tension of the mag follower, you would have a gun that now will not lock back.
A mag with a stronger spring might be able to overcome that, but if I were the OP, I would want the gun to work as well as it did before I sent it out.
