.40 Cal 165 Gr Gold Dot VS 180 Hydro Shock, we switched Duty Rounds.
Hi, About 2 Years ago we switched from the 180 GR Hydro Shocks which I liked to the 165 Gr Gold Dot. I shot the 180's better then I do the 165's. Just wondering how everyone feels about these two rounds Pros and cons and which would you carry if you had a choice? Thanks
I have a four or five hundred rounds of each, but Have to carry the 165's now.
P.S these are in a 4th Gen Glock 22.

I like Gold Dots better than hydroshocks. There was a problem a few years back with the hydroshock cavity filling with denim or other particles, which sometimes prevented expansion. In 40 cal, I much prefer 180's to the 165's. You get better penetration with less felt recoil. I've shot just about every 40 cal load there is and to me, the 165 gr. Speer Gold dot load is the hardest to control.
Kinda suprised your dept. was using the hydroshocks instead of the Fed HST. I really like the 180 HST's.
We were carrying the hydra Shocks for many many years, I don't mind the Gold Dots just would have them in 180 Gr the 165 are Def Snappy and I see a lot of scores aren't as good as tehy were with the 180 Gr Hydra's.
The Speer lawman 165 gr load duplicates the 165 gr gold dot load so you can use that for cost effective practice. I can't tell much difference shooting that loads and a 10 mm load in terms of recoil.
I have shot both and while the Gold Dot is a superior round compared to Hydra Shocks I would also prefer the 180 gr. less recoil and it can't hurt to add that extra 15 gr without much loss of velocity. I think it is impossible to beat a good 180 gr like HST, Ranger, or Gold Dots in 40SW
yes I would take the Gold Dot over any hydrashok in 40SW
Id rather have there 180

I guess it's just one of those things about not liking change, the hydras and it may just be the grain diff seem to shoot nicer, I wish we carried the 180 Gr rounds. The hydras seem to have done better when ever I had to put a animal down on the job.

Yeah, I'm going to echo everyone else. I would prefer the Gold Dot over the Hydrashok, but I would also prefer 180 over 165 for shootability.
Is a reason given whenever changes in duty ammo/gun occur?

The 165gr feel more 'snappy' than the 180gr loads. The Winchester Ranger T and Bonded even more so.
We changed over when a NYPD range guy worked for us as a temp. Guess thats what they shot.

NYPD shoot 9mm in Speer Gold Dot 124 gr. +P flavor.
I know NYPD shoots 9MM , but that's why we switched to the Gold Dots.

Gold Dot terminal performance is far better than Hydra Shoks. It's disappointing that people aren't shooting them as well though. Maybe someone can try the 180gr GDHPs to see if scores improve?

PDX1 > Gold Dot > Hydra Shock
PDX1
Gold Dot
I can't find a good video for the Hydra Shock, but I know that the performance is less than the above options
Wondering why your department didn't go to the 180 gold dot considering they were already using a 180 loading. Our department has issued 180gr gold dot for the .40.for at least 10 years that I know of.
Not sure, Things don't always make sense. I like the 180 Gr better myself.
