Got my first 1911 today, have a question
The right side safety seems loose, very loose. It has a lot of up and down movement where the left side is rock solid. It also doesn't seem to engage or disengage the safety all that well. Almost like it puts the safety on halfway. 50% of the time the gun will fire when the right safety is supposedly engaged. When the right side safety is fully in the "up" position, the left side still has about 1/16" to move to the fully up position. When disengaging the right safety the left safety barely moves down until the trigger is pulled and the hammer drops, then it goes into the normal down position. I bought this model because I shoot lefty and need the ambi safety. Need opinions please.
There are several different designs for an ambi safety - I am not sure which one Taurus uses. It is probably a notch and post style that has separated. You could either send it back to them, or have a local smith replace it with a more positive locking one. This is one reason most people don't like ambi safeties on a 1911.
nice gun,
the safety is usually the only issue with the pt1911.
try taking it all the way apart if you feel comfortable doing so and seeing if reassembling it will help.
best bet is to find a good gunsmith who will replace it with a nice one for a good deal do it yourself of you can wait 3 or more months for taurus to fix it.
I am still waiting for the wifes pt1911 to come back from them, Im pissed and will never buy another due to there lack of customer support.
If I were you I would research drop ins.
love these grips to if you are interested in a upgrade.
Mcg3686, I would sure be interested in learnig more about your grip upgrade. I've never seen any like that.
I still have the original grips on my PT1911 (3,000+ rounds).

great guy to deal with 2 colors for most 1911s and a couple others for odd size grips, some dremel work needed for taurus and possible other ambi safety.
I would recommend these to anyone.
sounds like the side safety lever is messed up.
I just did a total strip of my taurus and had to pay particular attention to the safetys because I couldn't find any info to remove the ambi safety.
the left side lever is the "dominant" one it has the actual safety the right side fits into the left side this is also the pivot point for the grip safety. I would get you a pic but I don't want to srtip it again it's a pita.
anyway it sounds like the male part of the interlocking shaft is stripped or machined wrong, thus it has a lot of play and doesn't allow the safety to fully engauge when using the right side.
to remove the ambi safety you have to use a padded(if you donna wanna scratch your pistol) flat tip screw driver and pry the safety out. I did mine reaaally slow and didn't pry upwards I twisted the tip of the driver, then pulled the safety lever out.
the way they fit together is like this. one side has a == (female) and the other (right side) is a –– male they are a friction fit and if part of either one is worn/mis matched it won't work correctly..
I'm sure someone else can explain or show pics better than I can...if not you have a general idea.
edit: one important thins I forgot is when you remove the safety you have to have it in the middle between on and off. you will kinda need to wiggle it back and fourth to get it out.
I also have a similar problem with my Taurus 1911. The safety has absolutely no positive locking in the up or down position. It feels like the spring might have been installed without a detent. I use a high grip and routinely place the weapon on safe accidently. No other 1911 I have ever owned behaves like this. They all had a noticeable click and held in place. Three months turn around? Forget it, I'll fix it myself.
More like 5 or 6 month turn around at Taurus ask for new parts if anything may fix the problem faster
