A friend brought me a Colt 1911 yesterday that he was thinking about doing some smith work to. I told him to hold off on doing anything to it until I could get an idea what its history was but there was a symbol at the end of the serial number that I'm not familiar with. Has anyone seen something that looks like this: -[ . The best I can describe it is it looks like a capital E with the middle line moved behind the E instead of where it should be.
Thanks for your help. I tried searching, but I don't know how to put this symbol into a search field... LOL

Do you know what year it was made and do you have pictures? Does it have slanted gold cup serrations on the slide?

No, it's definitely not a Gold Cup, I have a series 70 GC and this one didn't have any of the characteristics of a "Series 70" that I've come to be familiar with. Could it be a "C" with a dash? I'm assuming its a late 60's "Commercial" model, but I've never seen one in person so I'm not sure that Colt used a dash after the serial number.

It has a humped mainspring housing, straight slide serrations and standard sights. The serial number is 6 digits starting with 324, so it looks like this 324XXX -[

That was my first thought, but I don't know. I've never seen anything like this mark. I also thought maybe it was supposed to be an "E" but there was an error in the marking somehow. I guess it could be a dash and then a "C" but it really looks more like a [ than a C. The C would make sense since the Commercial models of that era had a "C" after the 6 digit serial number, but I never noticed a Colt serial number that utilized a dash before. The serial itself dates it around 1968 (if the mark truly is a "C"). If its not a Commercial model I don't know what to make of it...
