is the .480 ruger cartridge dead?

the don't seem to chamber new guns for it, is it dead?

Haven't heard of it in a good while..
Ruger discontinued it in 2008. It's dead. IMO , the 500 S&W and 460 killed it.
If Ruger could have (would have) elongated the cylinder and dealt with the rim so their guns would also accept the .475 Linebaugh - or chambered the Bisley single action in .480 - the cartridge might have had a chance. The Ruger DA gun in .480 (only) was just too limited in appeal to make it.
+1, a Bisley 5 shot would have been nice! The Super duper Redhawk is just too clunky for my taste.
I have the 7.5" Ruger Super Redhawk and really enjoy the pistol. It is a bit larger than what I like but it is quite accurate. Loaded with a good cast bullet of 400gr loaded to 1200fps or so it will take anything on this continent. People just don't understand the cartridge I guess. Everyone needs the biggest baddest whiz bang on the block.

+1 Love my SR480
Stopped making the guns in 08 after being available in a few different models. SRH, SRH Alaskans first in 6 shot, then after tight chamber issues the Alaskans went to 5 rounds. Just one of those rounds that didn't catch on, although I like it. I have a 480, in the Alaskan. It's not a snubbie you want to shoot a lot, but I can tame it down with reloads. It's one of my guns I'll never sell. It's one of the early 6 shot guns.
Doesn't something have to have been alive at some point to die?
