 Swapping a cylinder on a S&W 442?

I bought a titanium cylinder for a S&W 342 to replace the steel one in my 442. I had a gunsmith tell me this weekend that swapping it out is a shop job and that the cylinder has to fit to the action. He recommended I send it to S&W to have it done.
True or not?

You can try installing it yourself and it may fit just fine.
If it doesn't, I'd suggest you send it to the factory to have it fitted.

Send it in. Getting the timing "just right" is pretty darn important.

Is the titanium cylinder cut for moon clips?

Where did you get it and about how much do they cost?

Almost nothing drops in on revolvers. Occasionally you luck out but not oftern. Send it to Smith. Not many local gunsmiths know how to time a revolver anymore. Something of a lost art.
