random rant .. god i love revolvers
im not a huge gun collector or owner .. i have 2 revolvers and a home defense 12g pump...
im plannin on picking up a 3rd revolver soon, .22lr this time
anyways ...
ive been wanting to get myself and the wife a .22lr for a long time .. cheap for the range ..
every time i go to stores, shows, etc .. i LOVE semis ... ive shot a bunch, never owned one .. the revolver simplicity (i know semis can be as reliable, but i just dont 110% trust em like i do wheelguns)
but i never buy one. . im tempted .. i love the feel and look of glock 27s, i would love a 1911 (the only semi i KNOW i will own in time)
but i never go for it .. i can see myself owning 5-10 more wheelguns before i go for a semi (with the 1911 exception which i think will be my 35th bday present to myself next year)
they are cheaper than revolvers usually (i like S&W, Ruger) ... and i still never go for it
for example, the wife initially was lookin at 22/45 rugers.. cheap, reliable, fun .. and we have moved into lookin for a SP101 in .22lr to be a brother to my .357 i have for carry .. thats nearly double the cost, but damnit i love revolvers and she loves how she trusts them and can easily operate, clean, etc them..
am i the only one?
I own six revolvers.
None of them are .22s.
I cannot justify the price for a S&W in .22.
Just can't.
well the SP is a little cheaper than teh S&W
but think about it
500 rounds .22lr = $15
500 rounds 38/357 = $100 give or take
figure 250 per time to the range (this would be low for me LOL)
so save $85 every 2 range trips in ammo.. so 16 times to the range would get you a free S&W .22lr revolver! about 12 trips gets me my SP101 .. but really its like 6-8 trips cause ill fire off a TON if its cheap .22lr!
great practice for me with teh same weight and platform as my carry .357 .. just have to fire some larger rounds before leaving to remember the recoil
You make a good point.
If I ever found a good used S&W Model 17 or 18 I'd be tempted, but never ever would get a new one.
It's still just a .22 and a list price over $900 is wholly unjustified.
617 for $800, 317 for $650 or so
i think the ruger is the best bet for around $500 .. i can get one for $500 shipped to my FFL .. just waiting to make teh decision for sure ..
$500 isnt bad .. well $525 with FFL transfer ... thats easy to make up for in ammo
I agree though, i could have another large cailber revolver ... but i could have way more fun with a .22 ... :)
I have a couple revolvers in 22. A Ruger single six convertible and a S&W 617. Neither is inexpensive, the Smith more so. I have them as warm up, practice for their bigger brothers. The .22s I use are starting to get up there now in price, usually about $40.00+ a brick. I've dropped down to using bulk packs of Winchesters or Auto match. I do have a rather ample amount of the good ones, about 50,000 but still, replacing them is a tear jerker.
As for 357's going 500 for $100, I'm a bit lost. I roll my own, though I'm using a fast burning (uses less powder) powder (Titegroup), regular small pistol primers (CCI) (not magnums for fast burning) and Hornady XTP 158 grains bullets, best I can do is 500 for about $130 and that's not counting the brass if I had to buy it. Where do you get 500 .357's for $100. Might be worth getting them just to bust down the components.
With out a 22lr revolver the world is darkness and chaos.
I grew up shooting and highly recommend the S&W 422 or 622 a semi auto 22 that uses S&W 41 mags. These can be found for under $300
I have a plethora of 22 pistols but the 17s & 18s are the most fun. I have found used 17 & 18s this year for under $500 I got an 18 9 months ago off gunbroker for $485
Just start reconning and be ready to pounce.
the $100 was just a low low ball to make it make more sense LOL .. dont worry
I picked up a very clean K22 made in 1957 for less then you can buy a brand new one and any of the older 3 or 4 screw ones can be found pretty easily. I would like a model 18 [4"] but those seem to be a bit harder to find in nice shape for a decent price. If you find a nice older one, you'll never regret it.
We love our .22 revolvers!
We have a 4" S&W Model 18 and a 5 1/2" Colt New Frontier convertible .22LR/.22 Mag single action. We also have a Browning Buckmark and .22LR conversions for the 1911 and the HK4.
My son and I enjoy shooting them all but my wife really likes the Model 18 and my 9 year old daughter loves the Colt single action.
The great things about revolvers are the history in your hand, reliability, and the ability to shoot anything. I was given several thousand Remington 'Golden Bullets' They jam up the CMMG M4 top end and the semi auto pistols like crazy - but they shhot just fine in the revolvers. My daughter is pretty good with them in the Colt!
Pre Model 18, complete with all five screws

K-22 First Model and an M&P Target model, both from 1932.
Probably my two favorite revolvers.
Colt Diamondback. That was a lucky find at a great price. Gun shows suck though as I'm always told..................

I don't think you've been shooting with me since I bought this one.
