A couple more for you guys
I am a regular poster here on arfcom but I don't know anything about Lugers or P38s. My father-in-law has some health problems and my wife is in the process of taking inventory of his property and discovered a Luger and a P38. They won't be for sale, I just wondered what you guys can tell me about them. Thanks.
Here's the Luger
It has a holster with a magazine pouch and another small pouch inside the flap that holds a tool of some kind.
7606 and there is 06 in multiple places
The top says ERFURT 1920 1918
also the front strap of the grip is stamped 4/.R.R.6.52.
I will post the P38 soon. Thanks in advance for any info.
Your Luger is an original 1918 issue that was later used by the Wiemar government as denoted by the 1920 property stamp. It looks like it has an RC mark above the far left proof mark. This mark denotes the ruling of the Revision Commission. Basically the gun was made out of what were first reject parts, but due to demand were made to be functional. The marking on the front strap means that issued to the 4th Infantry Regiment 6th company and the 52nd pistol issued. The gun of course was made by the Royal armory at Erfurt.
ETA: Just noticed that the extractor has been replaced at some time as it should be numbered to the gun and proofed.
Thanks for the info on the Luger. Here is the P38:
It has a holster with a mag pouch in pretty rough shape.
The right side has three marks, the middle mark is the eagle/swastika
The left side says P.38 with the mark cyq and 2509b with another 2509b above the trigger
There is another 2509b on the front of the gun below the barrel. Thanks in advance for any info you can give me.
Does the Luger mag # match the gun's S/N? If so, this is pretty rare.
Dare I suggest you clean & oil them?

From the pics of your cyq Spree Werke P-38 it looks re-blued. These particular pistol were the lowest grade made finish wise. They normally show semi rough tool marks throughout the outer surfaces. Could you post pics of the proof marks or at least describe them? You should have some eagles w/swastika and a few eagle 88's on the right side of the slide. Is there anything near the serial number on the frame like a sunburst?
Bob- The only markings I see on the mag is P.08 and fxo. There are a couple of 37 proof marks on the mag as well. Thanks.
and what is the tool for?
Yes I plan to clean them up a bit! they've been been up in a closet for a long time.
Thanks for the info. Yes there are tool marks everywhere. The right side of the slide has 3 proof marks in a row: what looks like an eagle 88, an eagle swastika, and then another eagle 88. There is another eagle 88 right after the serial number on the frame above the trigger guard just below the takedown latch. no sunburst that I can see. when you open the action, there is an eagle 88 on the left side above the takedown latch.

The FXO marking on the mag denotes that it is the last issue mag used with a black Bakelite plug. These are very fragile and you should never load ammo into the mag. Your gun would have originally come with a wooden magazine bottom. The tool is a general use item. It can be used to remove the grip screws and the firing pin plunger as well as a magazine loader. What are the markings on the loading tool?
Have you ever taken apart a Luger before?

The P38 pistols serial number would indicate a manufacture date of april 1943. Got that info from the P38 forums "Spreewerke Production Chart" sticky.
I own a couple P08 Lugers, and a Spreewerkes P38 myself. My P38 was made in March 1945. The total lack of polish on the parts is more extreme on mine than the earlier P38 in your pics. My P38 looks like it was made in a damn big hurry...like maybe a Russian T34 was comi ng up the factory driveway when they stuck it together!
