Assuming they are both commercial models, pick whichever one looks nicer. The two rounds are virtually identical in power (with a slight edge to the 9X18 Makarov). However, you can probably get a better variety of ammo in the .380, including self-defense ammo. 9X18 ammo can often be had at a fair price if you don't mind it being steel cased.

For reloaders, their is a reasonable variety of 9X18 bullets available in cast, plated and jacketed. The same is of even more true for the .380.

If the 9X18 version is not a commercial one, I would get it. This is particularly true if it is an East German, Russian or Chinese one (they are worth more than the Bulgarian imports). The East German guns have an excellent reputation for having better fit, finish and triggers. The commercial guns have adjustable sights, while the military/police versions are not really adjustable.

A purist will argue that the only true Mak is chambered in 9X18, but if it is a commercial version, I would not care.

makarov.com has lots of good information and sells stuff for the Mak.
