 Franchi SPAS-12 - Is $1000 a great deal?

A friend has offered a early FIE Franchi SPAS-12, Folding stock for $1000. It has the cross bolt safety, not the lever.

Should I jump on it?

If you plan on just fondling it sure. If you plan on shooting it, no. Buy another shotgun.

IMHO it's a turd and I wouldn't pay half that for one.

I agree its rather bulky and impractical....I was thinking it would be a good investment at that price.

I like my Mossberg 590A1 Special Purpose alot better for real world/Zombie disposal Ops.

Thanks

Folding stock with hook? Full-length mag tube? The safety is important, but if you're buying it as an "investment" those features are just as important.

I sold mine for 150 after shooting it

For what they are bringing these days, yes... its a good deal... but a good gun, not so much.

I wanted one of those for ever, till I got my mitts (and wallet) on one. Absolute turd.

This one has the folding stock w/ hook, full length mag tube and the cross-bolt safety. I think its the one everyone wants.

Its a lot of money - for $1000 I could buy a Benneli that I could actually shoot and enjoy having. I guess I will pass.

It's a fair deal if in decent shape. They run $1k-1200 where I live.

There's a few on GB one is $1500 with 4 bids. Some are being listed at 2k with zero bids.

It'd be a cool gun to have. Maybe not cool to shoot but I've talked to people that took the time to learn the system and enjoyed shooting them.

I paid $1050 for mine at a gun shop. It has folding stock w/ hook, full mag tube, and it had the lever safety but I had my gunsmith friend convert it into cross bolt. It does have a complicated manual of arms, but its a badass range toy. I wouldnt use it for HD, but its good for blasting things you want lots of holes in. I too got it because of the coolness factor. It was in Terminator and Jurassic park to name two. Im not a guy to go out and buy all kinds of stuff from movies, just a collector of guns. It is deffinetly a head turner at the range.

I guess its all in what you want. I got mine because ive wanted one since I was a kid. Mines the fixed stock, but I want a folder at some point. Mine has functioned flawlessly for me, it is on the heavy side, but like I said depends on what u want it for. A grand isnt a horrible price with the folder, yes u could buy something else for the price, but the coolness factor wont be there!!!!lol!!

I have one with a solid stock. That is a great price and I do like mine a lot. I takes some fimiliarization to be able to reload and operate it reliably. I do have it sitting next to me at night sometimes.

Does the SPAS fall under the import ban?

As long as the SPAS-12 is featured in the Call of Duty series of video games, there will always be a market for them.

The market for the SPAS-12 was first created by the Movie "Terminator" and then expanded by "Jurassic Park". CoD is more about proving that the AK-47 is the best gun ever.

I have two, a fixed stock and a folder. They are very impractical, but they are great looking guns.
I don't think a guy would lose money on a folder for $1k.

Terminator is why I bought the AMT Lognslide Hardballer back in 1984.

It's part of the reason I have an Ar-180.

That sounds like a very desirable example, particularly given the updated safety is getting difficult to find. They work well if you know what you're doing with them - not many people do. Is the buffer intact? It'll damage them if shot without one. There should also be an o-ring on the end of the magazine tube which needs to be kept in good condition, or replaced if it wears.

They won't run well when the temperature drops, but obviously pump-action will keep going.

Both the 12 and 15. The 12 went out of production in the early 2000s, and I assume the 15 probably has, too. You can still find 15s at resonable prices in Europe, but they're rare and very expensive in the UK and America.

It's a shame as the 15 is a nice shotgun and would probably have appealed to the Saiga buyers.

Fuck, Run don't walk back to the gun store to get it for a grand.

Or pass on the info to someone who isn't part of the peanut gallery.

Offer him $800 or $900 cash, but don't necessarily pass on it at $1000. I'm all about grabbing it up if it's a good price. Worst case scenario, you sell it for $1500 on Gunbroker and you now have enough money to approach a benelli m4 or whatever the heck you want. Or you have lots of shells and some training/gear money.

I have been wanting a benelli m3 super90 for years, my father used to have one but it got stolen and I always loved the damn thing. I saw an old scratched up m1 on a local forum for dirt cheap. The thing was mechanically awesome and ate anything and everything I put into it, there were scratches on the barrel and a few on the receiver but for the price I got it for it should have been a rusted shut . I then found an m1 super90 in the configuration I wanted, 18 inch barrel, PG stock (though I think I like the standard stock even more...), 7 shot tube and rifle sights. I dumped the field M1 and picked up this "tacticool" m1, total cost to me once everything was said and done? $275. Look, buy, sell, buy. It's a vicious cycle.

Agreed.

I had one in the '80s and got rid of it... IMHO it exemplifies the word "unwieldy." But I wish I had kept it, just for the novelty (and because today it would be worth 4 times what I paid for it/sold it for back then ).

I walked away from a well-used but intact (all but the hook) folder for $1000 earlier this week.

I wouldn't call it an investment. Prices on the SPAS 12 have not moved much in 20 years.

Agree with Homeinvader. Due to no parts avalible, Franchi won't work on them and the lever safety being useless caused me to change my mind on getting another one. I had a solid stock, short mag tube with the soldered barrel extention/short sight radius model long ago and admittedly, it's probably the most intimidating shotgun ever. Mine didn't like to cycle in real cold weather and the pump is too slick/smooth to grip good with gloves on.
If you get it, check the back of the receiver closely for stress or cracks. The buffer in these guns weren't the best to begin with and age doesn't make them any better.

Get a good used Benelli M1 Super 90 Tactical and lots of ammo. SPAS12 is not a good weapon and should be a wall hanger.

Don't forget the Half Life series, took me years to figure that one out.

You can flip that immediately for $1500. Or keep it and sell it down the road for even more. The last two years they have gone up in price a bit due to increased appearances in video games (IMO).

As a practical shotgun, just nope. And I've owned several.

Great info on these shotguns guys thanks!

I just traded even "da uzi 9mm" pistol for a folder with the hook and old style lever safty.

After what I have read I plan on having my local gunsmith switch out the lever safty to the revised system and replace the O ring and buffer before I ever load it.

Does anybody have any place they would recommend as a parts source for the SPAS-12s?

Thanks!

Gunbroker, tons of SPAS parts on there lately. The desirable ones go quick, but they are available. Button safeties run about $300-$500, just so you know. It is not something your gunsmith can just modify, you need to buy the whole pack (it's quite different). I would buy a LAW 12 with the button safety, swap the two, then sell the LAW for a loss. That's the easiest way to do it these days.

I've owned 2 of them over the years, and hated them both. You'd be much better off holding out for a H&K Benelli super 90 in either M1 or M3 flavor. From both a practical function stand point as well as an investment the Benelli is a wiser choice. Just my .02
Icopy  [Member]

I also owned two of them, one with folding stock and one with standard stock. I think I paid $800 and $850 for each during the ban. Unless the weapon is pristine and you plan on just looking at it, I wouldn't pay more than $900. Parts are just too hard to find and expensive when you do find them.

Fixed or folder? I bought one for $550 4 years ago.

(It sold later for $1100 to pay for braces)
