Converting my basic Ruger 10/22 into a Target model??
I have a second Ruger 10/22 carbine that I want to convert into a Target model... I know Ruger has greatly changed since the 80s/90s, but back in those days, Ruger really didn't sell replacement parts to the general public, other than magazines. With that in mind, I do not "think" Ruger will sell their 20" blued finished, Target Model barrel, their Target grade trigger assembly and their wood Target Stock, with the grey finish... Please correct me if I'm wrong!!
...If Ruger can "convert" my carbine into a target model, life would be great!!
If this is the case, where can I find the above items from other makers that are either the same, or very close to Ruger's parts?? I saw one of Ruger's Target rifles in a blue finish and I have to say that the barrel was very nicely blued and the trigger seemed to be much smoother than their basic model's triggers. Also, the stock was a very nice one, but in a brown finish, but I "think" that their grey finished stock would have looked far better.
I thought about just selling my carbine, which is basically " new" and purchase a Target model, but Ruger basic 10/22s seem to be very slow movers in my area, unless they are one of the older models.
Thanks for looking!!
Build one using Volquartsen parts, it's easy an fun.

Are you really sure you want to convert it into a "Target" model? If you really insist then just shop around and you can buy all the parts you need easily. The "trigger" parts that are different are few and really not all that different. If you go to Ruger you can get a parts break down and go over them to see. Just download a manual for a 10/22 and it shows an exploded view with parts. As for the barrel, you can buy a used one for a reasonable price or even buy a new one if you want.
Here is one source:
Factory Ruger Target Barrel
They are out right now but if you shoot them an email or give them a call you might find out when they will have one. The reason they have them however is that they get a new 10/22 Target rifle and take off the factory barrel and replace it with an aftermarket bull barrel that will shoot better. Also, you can buy the barrel from other sources including Ruger direct. While they don't sell all parts here is what you can get:
Ruger Factory 10/22 parts
Then, there is always Brownell's and MidWayUSA. Also if you go over to RimFireCentral you can find lots of stuff. Just join and post what you are looking for. I bet you will soon find that you can get most anything your heart desires.
But when it comes to triggers and barrels, the aftermarket offers higher quality parts if you are building the rifle for accuracy. If you just like the looks of the factory barrel, then go find one....it shouldn't be too difficult. I know I have seen many of them listed on RFC.
Target 10/22 s are overrated IMO.
I had one all decked out... bull barrel, target trigger, Hogue overmolded stock, the whole 9 yards.
My box stock wood 10/22 shoots just as good... and with no restriction on ammo (target barrels have a tight chamber preventing CCI stingers).
But then again, I'm not really a good shot enough maybe to know the difference.
An ER Shaw or GM barrel will be cheaper and outshoot a factory Ruger barrel. Get one of those and a hogue stock and you have a better and cheaper gun. Of course if you want the best of the best go with Kidd or VQ but then you are talking way more money.
like has been said - you can do way better (probably for cheaper) with aftermarket parts
here's mine:
Shilen barrel - just had it threaded
Hogue stock
PA scope/rings
EGW base
I can't remember who made the replacement action parts - all titanium

Are you wanting it to look like the "Target" model or are you wanting one to actually play the part?
There are a number of aftermarket barrels you can buy to convert to look like a Target model.
If you want one that is going to perform like one then also replace the trigger group and get the bolt worked on.
If something like this is what you're looking for, you're better off building it yourself. Add a Hogue .920 stock, bull barrel, and Power Custom hammer and sear pack, and you're ahead of what the factory sends out anyway.

Here is mine, built from a stock 10/22
And here is a 5 shot 50 yard group

Green mountain makes some nice, cheap target barrels. Under a hundred bucks and dead simple to install. 10/22's are like a blank canvas - you can do anything you want with them.

I agree that the factory 10/22T guns are not the end all be all rifle.
I do like the barrels,I believe they have a chamber that will giv good accuracy with better reliability than some of the too tight aftermarket barrels
All factory Ruger triggers suck when compared with any of the aftermarket sets, buy a complete trigger or aftermarket parts. A decent trigger is the key to a target gun
Stock style/color/design are a matter of purpose and personal taste .
A Volquartsen recoil buffer, exact edge extractor, target hammer and bolt release are a must for any 10/22. The target hammer makes the trigger pull pretty nice.
I spent a lot of money and time building a 10/22 for silhouette matches. Its competitive, but can't quite keep up with the bolt action guns.
I shot the Chevy Truck Sportsman's Team Challeng for 4 years... and over the time greatly modified my 10/22... as others have commented, you can produce a custom rifle with excellent accuracy... my rifle with a 6x24 AO scope off bags, shooting WinSuperX high velocity will hold under 1" at 100y...Clark barrel, Fajen thumbhole stock was the easy part...talking to Mr. David Tubb and Mr. Ken Tapp ....add a second mounting screw to barrel, and full length bed the barrel... dont worry about the receiver... attach scope mount to barrel, and cantilever over receiver... reduce headspace on bolt... critical for consistency, limit the vertical movement of the firing pin...change the sear contact angle on the hammer (buy a good one from someone reputable)... but the best modification was to add a barrel tuner... 1 1/4 aluminum round stock... bore .930" hole, and saw slit lengthwise... install pinch bolt.. slip on barrel, shoot group, move tuner... groups will tighten and open with change in barrel harmonic vibration...lock it down when you get the accuracy you need, change when you need to change ammunition
