So after getting my 03 in the mail, I finally sat down and ordered my first official firearm. Gotta have something to write into the new bound book.
I haven't gotten it in the mail yet, but I'll update this when I do. I ended up ordering a Polish P64 from Southern Ohio Guns and it shipped today, so I should have it in hand just in time to fire off some of this bulk 9x18 I have on hand.
I've been reading up on the common issues with the P64, so while I was at it I ordered a set of springs from Wolf. While I was there, I picked up some improved springs for my Makarov as well. I'm a bit of a 9x18 Fanboy, so the next on the list is a CZ-82, and I'd like to pick up some proper milsurp Makarovs as well. I have one of the commercial Makarovs for now.
Anyway, I'm just giddy, and wishing UPS would hurry up and bring me my new pistol. I have some stuff that needs shooting.
So other than the other common things I've read about, the strong recoil and DA trigger pull, is there anything else I should be looking for with the P64? I'm used to the low sitting slide from the Makarov, so I expect to get bit a couple times before I get used to holding it properly, but other than that, it looks like this gun should be as reliable as my Makarov, and reasonably accurate.

A P-64 was one of my first C&R purchases after getting my FFL 03 as well. It is a great little pistol. I already had a Makarov and a CZ-82. I've been very impressed by the Radom produced firearms (I've also got a Polish Mosin Nagant M44 and a Polish Tokarev TT. The Poles were really craftsmen, I think now that all of the Polack jokes were kinda unfair. FWIW, my P-64 has been flawless so far totally stock. The DA trigger pull is indeed a little heavy, but the SA pull is quite decent. I haven't had an issue with slide bite, but I'm used to firing similar pistols.

Yeah, everything I've read from others who own them indicate they are as well built as my Makarov is, and I've had that one for almost 20 years now (it was my first handgun). Truth be told, I also seriously considered buying a Mosin, but that's just too cliche for a first C&R gun. So I'll probably buy one of those next

For now, though, I'm interested in handguns... especially Lugers and Walthers, and I'm really curious about those Nagant pistols I've seen advertised... I'm just curious about the cartridge. And I really really want a Webley. Sigh... my wife is going to hate this... I've already got a very long shopping list of things I can't afford...

I got a Nagant revolver at the same time I got my P-64... It is indeed a curious piece, especially the cartridge. I took it to the range and the guys there were like "WTF?" when I showed them the "innie" cartridges.
Luger and Webley are going to probably cost you a pretty penny. Get a Walther P38 and/or P1 now while they are still relatively inexpensive. I have a feeling the surplus ones will dry up quickly. PPs and PPKs can be found C&R eligible, but usually are $$$, although not usually as bad as a Luger or Webley is going to be.

That's exactly why I want a Nagant. I saw the cartridge for it and had a serious WTF moment, and I knew I had to get one at that point... I know the Lugers are going to be big dollar, that's more of a wishlist thing... allegedly, my Father in Law has a WWII carry-home Luger. I haven't seen this for myself, but next time I visit the in-laws I'm going to talk him into showing me. Then I'm gonna make him an offer... he likes me, so I may just get lucky. The Webley I want just because they are bad ass, and from what I've seen, the prices are not outrageous, at least not what I'd consider outrageous.
Walthers are definitely affordable though, and I've seen both P1 and P38s for very decent prices lately (now that I've started really paying attention). I also want a broom handle Mauser though the last two people I said that to looked at me like I had grown a third arm or something.
In any case, the UPS man brought me a box today from SOG :) I got a hand picked P64 from them and it got here fast. I put the order in via the web on Sunday and it shipped on Wednesday. The only things I was less than thrilled with were that it only came with one magazine, and it's got import marks. I was hoping that a C&R piece wouldn't have import marks on it. But for < $200 I am not going to complain. The finish looks very good to my amateur eye. There's expected wear on the corners of the front strap, the muzzle end of the slide (I guess that's from hostering) and where the slide runs along the frame. Looking down the barrel after taking it apart and the barrel looks brand new. No evidence of any pitting, no dirt or rust or anything but shiny. Everything was tight, no lose pieces, no rattles.
Took it out and fired about 50 rounds though it over lunch. I actually think I was more accurate with this at 10 yards than I am with my Makarov... which makes me think I'm either not holding the Mak right, or I've messed up the rear sight and need to sight it in again. but I shot nice tight groups with the P-64. The DA trigger was certainly heavy (felt about 2x as heavy as the Mak) but I didn't find it ridiculously heavy. Then again, after that first shot it's SA and featherlight, so that makes a difference. Having shot the Makarov for years, I did NOT earn any new cuts or scrapes from the slide catching my hand, and I also found the magazine release to actually work bettter than the one in my Mak... it was a LOT easier to manipulate.
I've got a recoil and hammer spring coming from Wolf so I'll have to do a comparison then and see how big a difference they make. But after 50 rounds of Brown Bear, I am tickled pink with my new 9x18 piece. I'll burn though a couple hundred more this weekend and try to find a fair IWB holster and see about carrying it now... and I need to look at buying a second one :)
