25 year old CVA shotgun project
25 years ago (or more) my father purchased this CVA shotgun kit....He had finished a couple of other kits before, but we never found the time to assemble this one and it sat in a closet....I mentioned it the other day, we dug it up, and now its mine....I plan to finish it out as a winter "cabin fever" project and might even shoot it next pheasant season...
The card inside clearly states NO STEEL SHOT....But Im wondering if the new lead alternatives like Hevi-Shot can run through this??
Volumetric measuring: Ive done my rifle by grain weight, Ive never done loads by volume before....Seems like a huge charge to me?? Can somebody better explain this? 2F or FFg powder is recommended....
Ive done a little black powder rifle shooting but never a shotgun.....Anything else I need to know about this? Keep in mind the warranty/instruction cards are 25 years old so what can I do with this with "modern" stuff?

I'm told that if you use a shot cup, you can get away with steel shot. Aside from that, I'm insanely jealous of you. I want one of those in the worst way.
Not to stir any jealousy.....But I cant express how excited I am to get this......Ive wanted it for YEARS....I think it will make a sweet field gun...Pretty sure it'll only shoot it for pheasants....Shouldering the bare stock just feels like a perfect fit......
I cant find much information on the web...Ive found a couple of kits on online auctions that ended several years ago...Or assorted parts that are quite pricey, I assume since they're scarce...I was surprised at the price of some of this stuff......
I don't have a kit version but a mfg built version. Father purchased it for me as a xmas present when i was 16.
I don't know about using modern shot in the gun always used lead #6 brought a couple bags years ago, 25lbs each bag and they i still have over 100lbs left.
My shotgun likes 2f instead of 3f GOEX. A couple of accessories i would recommend would be
CVA Deluxe Irish Shot Flask a
a volumetric Shotgun Powder Measure i use a 1 1/4 oz load poor the powder with the measure of 1 1/4 oz load and than shot.
I use the cva wads brought tons years ago. its a like a shotgun wad and uses a paper over the top cover on top of the shot. Works really well on pheasants. if you hit them sold they drop like a rock; plus they are fast to reload.
Try many different wads grouping will varies for wad to wad. good luck and give us a range report after you have it built.
I bought one just like that on Gunbroker NIB about two weeks ago. I've been slowly collecting the stuff to start working on it including a spare set of barrels. I initially bought it with the intention of chopping the barrels down and using it as a toy, but that just didn't seem right to me so I bought the spare barrels to play with. The guy I bought them from had a second set- only problem is they mount with a screw instead of a wedge but that shouldn't be hard to fix (on the barrels).
I would really like to get the stock checkered but I can't afford that- anybody know where I could get it laser checkered instead? I know it wouldn't look quite as nice, but it's still only a CVA not some fine English fowler.
ETA- Check out Track of the Wolf for more BP shotgun accessories.

Color me green with envy.

Thanx for the links! I found TOTW already, thats about the only place I found the .690 balls...Ive been getting the bench cleared off so Ill have a place to work...Cant wait and Ill post pix...
On edit: I agree on the checkering....I know where to have it blued, but I dont know anyone locally that does checkering....Im tempted to try it myself, learning first on some cheap dowels....The tools are cheap enough, but dunno if I have the balls for it...

That's awesome. I did a T/C Hawken kit a few years ago that my dad had bought in the early eighties. I'll have to keep an eye out for one of those too.
I'd like to get one and take the barrels down to 14.5" .

Wow- yeah I'd be interested in another!

Hey, you got one already! Me first!
If he still did, I'd have it!

Wow, I thought I was the only one with a CVA kit stashed away.

Is it for sale? I haven't bought my wife a Christmas present yet!

I have one here but the stock is badly warped. Any idea where I can find a good one?
Yeah, it is the double barrel BP shotgun, really kewl if I can get it working.
