Savage Smokeless ML
Who has one and what's the verdict? I heard Savage has discontinued them. I'd love to have one for hunting cause I hate cleaning my Remington 700ML.

I think they were discontinued due to moron's blowing up their rifles.
A buddy of mine has one (and a Remmy 700ML as well) and he loves it. I am not sure what his loads are but he has not had any issues with it, no Kabooms, still has all ten fingers.
If you don't like cleaning your ML then I might suggest using some of the newer ML powders out there. I was talked into using American Pioneer powder (and then Shockey's Gold) by a long time ML hunter I know. I will not go back to Pyrodex or 777, no way. The APP or SG powders (or sticks) are great, easy clean up with just water (I still use a little soap anyway) when I clean my Encore. Give it a "Shot", you might be surprised.
BTW, if you get distracted when you are loading up the ML and forget to put in the bullet those powder sticks go flying down range like flaming balls from a roman candles with a dense smoke trail!
Indy
I have one, they are awesome.
Low maintenence and very good accuracy. most shoot better with a fouled barrel. after a couple fouling shots, I get 1 MOA out to 150 yds (just haven't shot groups at 200––but it has been pretty good each time I try it) and that's with the craptastic tupperware stock.
Have to find the right mix of sabots, bullets and powder. NOT like a reg. BP gun, the sabot/bullet combo needs to be tight for these due to smokeless needing more back pressure. Also have to wait for the barrel to cool during range sessions, as the sabot will get warm and not work as well if not.
Google Dougs Message Boards Savage –– there are 2 boards, one is an archive and one active. Lots of info.
I MUST have one!!!
I've had mine for about 5 years now. Still shoot the Hornady XTP 45 caliber bullets. At 100 yards I shoot clover leaf groups. The new ones have the Accu-trigger. Saw one at the range two weeks ago. The owner loved it.
I personally recommend 250gr bullets and N110 powder if it works in your gun.
I noticed significant recoil reduction compared to the 300gr loads. (using 250 FTX now, the 300's were XTPs)
I personally use standard MMP short black sabots, others have great success with the harvester RED crush rib (this one is specifically made for smokeless ML's)
Good luck
I love mine.
I'll be honest, I shot the ramrod out of it and ruined the barrel (accuracy-wise, anyway.....no structural damage) but before then, it was a tackdriver and a deer-slayer.
And when you read the horror stories about them blowing up......they're just the ravings of a has-been in the industry who has a bone to pick. You can safely ignore them.

Hey, when dougs message boards smokeless site gets back to buying and selling, you should post up a WTB std 50 cal barrel. Guys were putting custom 40's and 45's (barrels) on a LOT for a while there, and selling the stock 50 cal barrels cheap (like $50 IIRC). (right now they are not allwed to buy/sell for some reason, but are supposed to be getting it worked out)

I may seriously do that. I used to post there when I first got the Savage, but stopped about the time I got really interested in ARs.

Buy it while they still are out there.
Holy grail

Another huge plus is not dealing with BP. I forgot to clean my old Win. x-150 BP after 1 shot to confirm zero and 2 weeks later it looked like a sewer pipe. My 10-ML2 i did not clean for a year after 10 shots and bore is still nice and shiny after a patch swab.
The only 2 complaint's i have is after you shoot, my Win. 209 primer holds very tight to the bolt and can be hard to get out, although this may just be with the brand i am using. The second one is the factory synthetic stock is not so great, and flexes a bit at the forearm. You can get a wood stock version, but it will be heavier and more $

What kind of group did that ram rod shoot?
That is a testiment to the strength of this rifle, i have heard of some guys destroying their barrels by shooting ram rods.

If the ramrod bulged the barrel, I can't find where.
Having said that, accuracy went to pot afterwards.

When mine does that, I cock the bolt and dry-fire on the spent primer. That loosens it up, every time.

I have the laminated version. Excellent stock, but, yes, kinda heavy.

The buy/sell board is now back. These are going for big money on GB now since the savage discontinue announcement. That's why i just listed 1 or my 2 on the EE and will prob. move it off to GB soon.
Just picked up a 10ML-II with camo stock and stainless. Found a gread deal for $550 (new) that I couldn't pass up. Just have to figure out what optics and mounts to use now. Can't wait to take it out to the range and get it dialed in.

That's a great price. Use GOOD glass, as this rifle can eat scopes. Bushnell elite, Leupold VX3 or FX3, Zeiss Conquest ect. PM me for links for everything you need to know about the 10ml 2.

Excellent advice. You're dealing with a rifle that can have far, far more recoil than a 30-06.
If you have accuracy issues, my first suspect would be your synthetic stock. Also, if yours is pre-accutrigger, get a Rifle Basix aftermarket trigger for it. You'll thank me.
Loads: If you can get Vhitavouri powder, try VV110 first. If you can't, and you want a trouble-free mild-recoiling load (but not top velocity and trajectory) try AA 5744. That's the powder I like to use, actually. Buy a set of Lee Dippers to measure your powder with.
Bullets for deer start and end with the Hornady SST 250-grainer. Barnes Expanders are awesome but too expensive and shed velocity pretty fast. Hornady XTPs will expand too much at the velocities you're capable of now. You can get the SST's for less than $0.60 each (bullet and sabot together) if you buy the bullets in 50-packs and buy MMP .452 sabots in 50-packs. I recommend MMP sabots even if you have to buy extras and throw away the sabots that come with the small packages of SST bullets. MMP's are just that awesome.
You're going to love it the first time you pull the trigger on a buck and get to watch him fall.

Just an FYI, no need to buy 20 round combo sabot SST packs anymore, the 250 gr .452 FTX is nearly or completely identical, and can be bought in bulk reloading components...
I find that recoil is MUCH less (to me) when shooting 250s compared to 300s –– FWIW.

Still lots of NIB examples out there, Bud's had them last time I checked. Not cheap, but nice.
