 Local SOT rant, incompetence rampant!

Here is my experience with three local SOT's:

SOT #1 has a regular fun shop store front. Had bought several guns from him in the past, all without incident. Went in one time to see if he would match a $499 price (he had them priced at $549) on a Glock 17 that a shop down the street had as I figured I'd give him the chance to get my business first, He agrees. I had an extended slide release with me, as I knew I was going to be getting the 17 that day one way or another, and asked if he could throw it on for me before I left. Sure he says, but he would have to charge me $50 because "see that pin in there? It's a real pain in the ass" Having installed them on my other Glock's in under 30 seconds with a punch, I already knew he was full of it and trying to make that $50 back on the gun he just sold me so I told him I'd pass.

SOT#1
Then a few months later I had the striker on that 17 I bought from him break on me. I called Glock about getting a replacement and they gave me the whole "we only ship parts to 'certified Glock armorers' or FFL's" So I call and talk to this guy and ask him to order a striker for me under warranty and to call me when he gets it. "Sure" he tells me, just email me the serial number off your Glock and I'll get it taken care of. After waiting for over 2 months I contact him again; "Oh, yeah I don't know what happened, they never sent it I'll check into it" Yeah, RIGHT. So I order one myself from lone wolf or glockmeister (not sure which) and eat the $45 or whatever they cost.

SOT#1 Also had a friend go there and place a $100 down payment for a Glock 17 RTF2. This was going to be his first gun. He gave them five 20 dollar bills, which they illegally photocopied, and he even filled out his 4473 as he doesn't have his CCW and this way the wait time could start before he came back to pay it off and pick it up. He calls me one day, about a month later, and says he is at the shop and they have no record of his down payment, and the Glock that they had put aside for him is no where to be found, nor is his $100. He wanted to know if I could remember the exact date we were in the shop to order so they could check their records, but I couldn't. He wastes 2 more 50+ mile trips to the shop to try to get it all figured out, but to no avail. They end up with his $100, and now almost a year later he still doesn't own a gun as I believe the entire ordeal discouraged him quite a bit.

So this SOT in the above three incidents is one of my choices of people to locally handle my transfers. Yeah, I DON"T THINK SO!

SOT#2 This guy is the one who did my very first transfer for me of an SWR Trident9. I realize form 3's coming through a manufacturer can take a while as they may be behind on orders and may not even start the form 3 for a while as they catch up, but I had to wait over 6 months back in 2009 before he called me to come in and fill out my form 4. He charged me quite a bit for the transfer, and while I don't remember exactly how much, I want to say $150, which, while high, I wouldn't even care about that much had he even made an effort with it. I come in to his pawn shop to fill out the form 4, and he has his teenage son fill it in on the computer while he tells him how to do it while sitting across the room (out of monitor viewing distance and therefore can't see what his son is actually doing) and eats a Subway sandwich. His son prints it out and having done a ton of research before hand, I notice some error, which I can't remember the details of, but it has to be fixed and printed out again. THEN on top of that he tells me to fill out the rest myself and mail it in to the ATF. I figured for the amount of money I was giving him he could have done more than fill out the abcolute bare minimum on the form 4 and shove me out the door. Unbelievable.

Now fast forward 4 months or so and I call the ATF to check on the form 4, they say it has been approved on such and such date, which happens to be almost a month back from the day I was calling. So I call my dealer and ask if he has my stamp and he says "Oh yes I was just about to call you" at which point I tell him that the ATF said it had been approved about a month ago and should have been there three weeks ago. He tells me that he may have had it for a few weeks and apologizes for not calling me but he had been having "health problems" Okay,,,

SOT #3... Another local pawn shop owner. I go in and ask him about handling a transfer on an M4 2000 for me as I planned to buy it from Bryon at MajorMalfunction. This guy starts going off about how there were new laws about buying things out of state and something about sales tax?? and how he doesn't want to get in trouble with the state....Wow okay....So he basically flat out refuses to handle the transfer that way, so I ask him what his price would be on an AAC M4 2000. I leave my name, phone number and email and tell him I am ready to buy, just let me know. He tells me he will contact AAC and get back to me. Nearly two months later I call him to ask if he had any information yet, he says he is still waiting on AAC. Well, almost a YEAR later now and I have still yet to hear back from him.

I even, out of desperation, went back and called SOT #2 to see if he could get me an M4 2000. Didn't hear from him for a few months, sent him an email follow up that was never replied to either.

Three SOT's and not ONE of them is worthy of my business in my mind. Is this typical, or have I had terrible luck? i still need an M4 2000, almost 2 years later, but I can't find anyone that is competent enough or honest enough or that even wants my business at all!!
I am seriously about to give up!!

FWIW, I'm in the southwest Florida area.

Damn, I would think that owning a business and going to the trouble and expense of getting FFL/SOT licenses would make someone WANT to bring in revenue. None of the dumbasses in your story seem at all interested in making money.

SOT 1 doesn't sound that bad. You haggled for a gun then expected to get "free" service from the guy. Putting him out over $100. He made $50 back.
As for the warranty work, you're expecting a gun shop to work pro bono for you (again) to save you the trouble of shipping a gun back to Glock. You're assessment here is off base.

SOT 2, why didn't your friend ask for a receipt for the deposit? SOP in every store I've been in is get a receipt. While that's no excuse for their shitty filing system, at least with a receipt your buddy had some proof as to what he paid and for what. However, in 2012 I'd be skeptical of using a shop that doesn't maintain electronic sales records unless you knew the owners or had a lot of experience with them.

SOT 3, Sounds like the guy was making excuses to avoid the transfer. I've encountered a few SOTs like that. They have a SOT to draw business to their shop with their cool toys but they only want to sell high profit margin items or what few items they have in stock. I had one shop that would push YHM suppressors all the time and their prices were way off base but the YHM stuff was "just as good".

I would still use SOT1 but I wouldn't expect anything for free.

SOT#1: I never said I was expecting anything for free. I would have paid $10 max for something that literally takes SECONDS to do, but he tried LYING to me and saying it was a very difficult part to replace which it is NOT. The lying is what pissed me off, he could have asked for $50 for doing it WITHOUT lying to me and I wouldn't have cared beyond thinking it was too much to charge.

When did I say I wasn't willing to pay a fee for him getting me a striker included (free for him) in his next shipment from Glock? His ignoring it and never getting it for me is okay??

My friend lost his receipt, yes his bad, but that doesn't excuse their incompetence. This incident was with SOT#1, not 2, so this is another issue with him. I don't want this guy handling my transfer.
Yeah, SOT#1 likes to do the exact same thing and push YHM stuff at a premium with the same "just as good as" BS

I agree with you that SOT#3 was just making excuses to do the transfer, which was fine as I said "okay, so you get me an AAC M4 2000 and I'll buy it from you" to which he NEVER got back to me on, Same with SOT#2 who never got back to me on getting an M4 2000.

EDIT: I appreciate your reply, but I think you failed to read it thoroughly, or I wrote it in a confusing manner. All three of the first incidents were with SOT#1. SOT#2 is the guy I did one transfer through who didn't seem too interested in doing his part.

sorry, I was reading it on an iPhone. I re-read it.

SOT 1, just sounds like he was trying to make money. It's what businesses do. I really don't fault them on that. There is also additional liability working with customer supplied parts that many gunsmiths don't want to accept. I had to call 2-3 different places to install a set of Trijicon night sights on my Glock, because they all wanted to order the parts direct (probably b/c they can make more profit that way, but also because who knows the condition of my sights, whether or not they are defective or deformed, taken off another gun, etc).

however, I would not forgive the second incident. As I said, if I spent $100 on something, I'd make sure I kept my receipt somewhere safe. it still shows a lot of incompetence on the shop's end if they can't keep track of orders, money given, etc. I agree that if they can't keep their paperwork straight for an easy title I transfer, there is little confidence that they could handle the "burden" (sarcasm) of the Form 4 process.

SOT 2, just sounds like a lazy dealer. I had to call and harass my dealer about my form 4 as well. the way NFA transfers are handled they get all their money up front, so what do they care if they make you wait for a few extra weeks. Your money is already making them interest in the bank.

The fact that neither SOT2 or SOT3 could give you any information on one of the most common AAC cans on the market, is ridiculous.

I'd look some place else.

AAC's website has a dealer locator. Start there.

SOT #1 should have told you to send the Glock back for warranty repair. That's why guns have a warranty. I agree he screwed up with the deposit. Your friend should have demanded an invoice or estimate when putting down the deposit, but the dealer screwed up.

Regarding SOT #3, AAC is a pain in the ass to deal with as an SOT. They frequently won't contact dealers to provide them pricing. I know of several other SOTs who have tried multiple times to get set up as stocking dealers or even just find out what dealer pricing is with AAC only to be ignored. It's quite possible he actually was waiting to hear back from them.

It's possible SOT #2 decided he didn't want your business after the first transfer, and that's why he didn't reply. Sometimes it's better to miss out on the business than have to deal with someone calling every week asking if their forms came in yet. (I'm not implying you did that. It's just an example)
