screwed up form 1
So I called to check status on my sbr form one and they could not find it. After some round about checking it appears they when filling out the paperwork I typed an extra number in the serial number. They said they would tag my form and the examiner would contact me. What does that mean? What will I have to do? I added an extra 0. My examiner is someone like dudeash.
Thanks
You want the good news, or the bad news?
The good news is, what will happen is when yours comes to the top of the pile, if the tag is attached, the examiner will pull it, fill out a form letter explaining what you need to do, stuff it in an envelope with the Form 1's and mail them to you. When you get it, you do as instructed to correct the Form 1's, you mail them back. As soon as she gets the corrected forms, and assuming you corrected them to ATF's satisfaction, they should get approved within two or three days of her receiving the corrected Form 1's. So all it has done is slow your approval by the mailing time to and from you, plus two or three days.
The bad news is, the extra time it took the examiner to do all this took up about the 15-20 minutes that it would take to approve another three or four forms. So your typo just pushed everyone else in line back by three or four spots.
I hate to sound like a grump, but something like
40% of the forms arriving at NFA Branch have errors that need correcting ... and fixing a bad application takes three or four times the time it takes to approve correctly submitted forms.
Please, don't complain about the time it takes nowadays to get forms approved, if you can't at least triple-check your application before you drop it in the mail. The Obama Administration is not gonna give us enough examiners to handle the workload ... so it's up to us to make sure everything is submitted correctly, and minimize the delay.
Rant off.

Couldn't have said it better. I have yet to make a single mistake on any of my Forms. Something this important needs to be checked a good 5 times before being mailed off, to help us ALL.

Thanks for the reply Tony. I put 3 instead of two consecutive 0's in the serial number. While this is far from my first stamp it is my first screw up. I appreciate the info.
It was not intentional.
To the other guy, you can stfu and quit shitting in my thread. I do not need you to quote a mod that clearly knows more than most other people on this site about nfa, or add your two cents to something that was an honest mistake. You added absolutely nothing constructive to my question but instead tried to flex up and act like a dick. Thanks for nothing.

+1 They WILL catch errors in most cases and this completely gums up the works for everyone.
t221, thanks for the compliment, and again, my apology for being grumpy over an honest mistake. They happen. I'm just trying to remind everyone that the more careful we are in preparing applications, the faster they move through the system.
BTW, since you are Form 1-ing a new NFA item, the serial number is not yet in the system. So if you had not called and had it flagged, it would have been approved with the incorrect SN. That would not have slowed the process one minute ... but you would have been left with an approved Form 1 listing an SN different from the one on your SBR.
When this happens –– and it's not uncommon –– the remedy is:
––Write a letter to NFA Branch explaining that there is a typo in the SN, and ask that the NFA Registry be corrected to the actual SN. Enclose a photo of the SN on the receiver, with the digits clearly legible. Send the letter in duplicate with an SSAE, and ask that they mark one copy "received" and return it to you in the SSAE. They will do so; you do not get a new, corrected copy of the Form 1, and you cannot lawfully make changes on your Form 1 after it has been approved, so you keep your copy of the letter with your Form 1 to prove it has been corrected.
However, if the item is already in the Registry and you typo the SN on a Form 4 or 5, the application will get bounced as "no such registered NFA item." In that case, the procedure will be the same as the one you took by flagging your F1: ATF will return both copies to you for correction of the SN.
In the past, some examiners have been willing to correct it for you at their desk, without returning the forms, but I believe NFA Branch no longer will make changes for you. However, if you are ever in that situation, it doesn't hurt to ask.
HTH.
Thanks again Tony!
So now I'm curious if you discovered the error after you got the form back what would stop you from adding the extra "0" to the SN to make it right?

Sorry if you took my comment the wrong way. I wasn't shitting in your thread or being a dick. I was agreeing with the mod b/c he makes a good point. Shame to see someone get so riled up over nothing. Try to enjoy life a little more bud, and enjoy the NFA item when you get it!

Well I guess it would be his own integrity, if your making a Title 1 weapon into Title 2 it say on the Form 1's directions not to alter the firearms original serial number.
