this isn't GD.

OP, go to a few gunshops in your area and handle a few guns, and see what feels good.

$500???

I'd throw in a little more and pick up a new Remington 700 .308 AAC-SD.

Do you have an AK? If you are looking to get into that game you could go with a WASR-10 for starters.

Revolvers are always fun to shoot. Look at S&W .357 or .44 mag. I like the S&W because they usually have good triggers. The .357 is probably more fun and affordable to shoot but you can hunt with the .44. Used revolvers can be a good way to go, they're fairly simple to evaluate in terms of condition.

I think your $500 budget is a bit low for a bolt rifle. By the time you get decent optics you'll be way over budget unless you somehow find a good deal. I don't know too many people willing to part with a bolt gun that's a shooter. But they're always excited to unload a problem child...
