You did good to avoid the crush washer, but no washers are the way to go. I never use any washers for my mounts.
Your local gunsmith or machinist can trim the flash hider / mount so you don't need to shim it.
I am right at 175 days on an M4-2000! Yours looks great. Let us know how it shoots when you have a chance.

That's a great idea, never thought of that.
It shot great, sounded like a 22lr, shot indoors and the loudest sound was the round hitting the backstop.
