 McMillan TAC-50 and optics

Hello,

I will be purchasing a TAC-50 today. I'm going to go ahead and get McMillan's package deal and I have the choice of two optics: the Leupold Mk 4 16x40mm M1 Mil Dot or the Nightforce 8-32x56 NSX Mil Dot. I am leaning toward the Nightforce, but I don't really know jack about optics in this league. I'd love to hear opinions if any of you all are knowledgeable on one of these optics.

Thanks,

Brian

Edit: before you even say it, yes I am aware .50s are banned in Kalifornistan. I'm only stationed here, and a lawful resident of Florida.

both are great optics
i have 4 leupolds myself but no night forces

i would have to say the NF NSX would be the top pic in that match up

more magnification and a bigger bell

both are great glass
both have around 100 moa built in (more than enough to go from 100 yard 0 to past 1,000 yard 0)
both have great warranties
both made in usa
both have side focus
and both have optional illuminated retical and many retical choices
if your concerned about weight for any reason (usually light class match rifles) the Leupolds are much lighter
so it comes down to the $$$$$ and personal preference

I'd personally go with the 5.5-22x NXS versions. You get an extra 45 MOA elevation (100MOA vs. 65MOA on the 8-32x), and I doubt you'll really need the 32x zoom. I plink out to about 1500yd with my .50bmg and a fixed 10x42mm scope. and I can see sub-MOA objects at that range easily.

I've contemplated a 5.5-22x for my .50 several times, just don't have enough extra cash and the 10x is working as is.

Thanks guys. I'm gonna ask about substituting the 8-32 with the 5.5-22x 56 NXS with the zero stop feature as I do think I would prefer that model. It looks like it cost a little more, but its a drop in the bucket compared to what I'm about to spend

We've got the Nightforce 12x42 on our TAC-50. I had my doubts when we first installed it, but really happy with it so far. My 52 year old eyes just don't see well enough anymore. I have the Leupold 3.5x10 on my Kimber .308 and really struggle at 400 yards. I would like to put the Nightforce 5.5x22 on it. When you order your TAC-50, be careful on which base you get. Ours came with the 45moa and we switched it to the 30moa. We shoot anywhere from 200-1200 yards. We couldn't get adjusted up close with the 45moa. I know we aren't even touching on the rifles capabilities. Hope you enjoy it.

I have both scopes and both do there job. The NF scopes are better made than the leupolds and have more adjustment and the 5.5-22x56 has the most eye releaf. I dont have any scopes with zero stops but have messed with em. I just not impressed with it and would rather buy ammo with the extra money. I would suggest the mlr instead of the mil dot. Mho

I have a N/F 5.5-22x56 and a N/F 12-42x56and I have two 8-32X56 N/F scopes and I like the 8-32x56 the best still after 12 years and 15000 plus rounds of ammo in 1000 yard matches and 2200 yard fun shooting. With a 20moa base and the 8-32 scope I can shoot from 100 yards out past 1500 yards and the 32 power really comes in handy a lot.

Thanks guys. I really appreciate the input.

Ok, just ordered Big Mac. I took you guy's advice and went with the 5.5-22x 56 NXS with the MLR reticle. It was a free upgrade, so that was nice. Even the gentleman at McMillan strongly recommended the 5.5-22x over the 8-32x for this platform.

I'll be sure to post pics once I get it all in.

I have a tac50 with the 5.5-22x56 on it. It is THE way to go. I have a Leupy on my Barrett 82, but only because that weapon is not capable of true long range shooting because of its accuracy limitations.

You should seriously consider the NPR1 and NPR2 reticles rather than the MLR, unless you're accustomed to ranging and shooting in mil radians. Those former reticles have MOA hashes that allow you to make adjustments to your shots based on your spotter's feedback without moving your dials.....much quicker....at least in field conditions rather than range conditions

I have one long range gun with the NXS with the mil dot, and I wish I had the NPR1 or NPR2 on it. I have those reticles on two other NXS scopes, one which I sent back to NF and paid $250 to get the mil dot changed to an NPR1.

Just my $.02

Oh, here you go

Oh, and here's two shots at 1000 yards from the tac50 with factory AMAX ammo, NOT RELOADS!

Thanks Ed..

I've been long into this question and am right with your reply. I already have a 5.5 x 22 NXS 56 on my GAP Crusader and want to get the best glass I can afford for my Tactilite T1 “Duty”.

Your post speaks volumes – thanks again…

Thanks for the post. I've ordered the MLR already (and the whole package should be shipping today or tomorrow) but I appreciate the info.

This is good advice.
