Im looking for a good quality machete that I can keep in the back of my jeep. I came across this deal on a Gerber. Anyone have experience with it? Anyone have a better suggestion? Thanks!

I have that Gerber and im not a fan. I hate the teeth on the back and i got 2 rolls in the edge after just an hour of light use.

Check out Tramontina machetes. They can be had on ebay in 12" to 24" for $13 to $20. I have my first one on the way after having them recommended over and over on a different blades forum.

Pretty much every Gerber machete I've tried has sucked donkey balls. As the poster above me said, tramantina is good and I've had good times with Imacasa also.

I do not think they have a full tang, a good one will have a full one.

Another vote for Tramontina. I use the 14" bolo. $8 at the local flea market.

Haha well I guess I know not to get a Gerber. Thanks for the recommendations. Just thought that was a great price for a Gerber but if its not going to last Ill pass. Last winter I had to resort to using my ka-bar to hack some branches off a tree to shove under my wheels when I got stuck in the snow, I want a nice heavy machete that will get the job done instead of using my survival knife that Id rather not hack at stuff with.

I got 2 cold steel ones. They are pretty good for what they are; no muss, no fuss.

What will you be using it for?

If you live in the woods, you might be better off with a thick machete, something like a Golok that can be gotten cheaply from Condor, or you can pay more and get an ESEE Junglas.

If you live in the jungle get something light and thin, like the Tramontina, something from Imacasa, or the cheap Cold Steel machetes would work fine.

RatDrall nailed it...jungle type brush- light and thin
Heavy brush...heavy blade
I cut a lot of cedar in Texas and you want the right tool for the job. I had a hard time spending the money for the Woodsmans Pal but like tump said ...it is worth the money
