Considering a Sig 556/516 because of the option of the Sig 522 as a trainer

I'm really torn on what to purchase for a rifle and I really love the Sig 522lr as a fun trainer rifle that will shoot any .22 all day. I'm actually considering getting a Sig 556 or 516 in part because of the existence of the 522 and the ability to have an awesome trainer that I can shoot as a perfect substitute with identical feel and controls. Is buying a rifle based around the fact that there is the best tactical .22 substitute available crazy? I can pretty much buy a Sig 522 and Sig 516 or 556 for the same price as some of the other rifles I'm looking at (ruger 556, stg-556, XCR, etc). Then down the line I can get a Sig 716 and have a matching lineup.

The Sigs look like a great deal and I'm almost wondering why they seem to be priced $300-$500 better than some of their counterparts. Are they lacking anything, any issues or reasons I shouldn't consider one?

I love my 556, 516 and my 522. They are all very accurate and reliable.

The 522 is a good sub-caliber trainer for the 556, but hte 516 is an AR15 so the 522 isn't really a direct match.

Get them all. You won't be disappointed.

I'm looking forward to a 716 as well.

Gotcha, I really don't want an AR so I would probably go with a 556 SWAT.

How does the 556 stack up against similarly priced or pricier ARs? Any drawbacks?

I love my 556 and my 522s. They make a great understudy for the big boy and I really like how easy the 556 is to clean. I am also eagerly anticipating the 716.

I would recommend the Patrol SWAT. The Classic SWAT I have could be considered nose heavy. It didn't bother me until I mounted a suppressor. Now since I've had it a while I do not really see the need for the Classic over the Patrol. Overall I really like my 556. I can honestly say it is as reliable as any AR I've had.

I honestly was thinking this very same thing this week. I was considering building another AR, as my first AR build is really more of a precision rifle than it is a fighting gun. I'd like something smaller and more manuverable for home defense / carbine classes. I already have a 522 that I absolutely LOVE. The 556 is priced right (at around a grand from buds gun shop). It seems like a lot of gun for $1000 given the other alternatives.

Not to hijack someone elses topic but I'm looking for a 556 SWAT Pistol and the cheapest place I have found is gunbroker.. That cannot be right... does anyone know of other places that are reasonable?

If I had known what I know now I would have gone with the patrol instead of the standard ER for weight. Regarding reliability, a bunch of friends and I were out shooting a few weeks back and as the round count climbed, my sig and my buddy's gas piston H&K AR were the only rifles that kept going consitently after the 500-600 round mark. The AR's starting misfeeding and jamming.

Do it! I actually bought the 522 first and I like it so much I wanted a 556. Then my buddy bought one and once I shot it I knew it was my next rifle. I lucked out on a great price on a 556 classic in the EE just last week. I am setting up both rifles as close as possible.

Same progression here as well. A while back I bought my daughter a 522 as a graduation gift. We both enjoyed it so much I ended up getting a pair of 556 Patrols.

Now all I need is another 522, since she gives me so much grief about borrowing hers
