Models with rails....

Can the models with the rails (swat models) have the rails removed and regular hand guards added? Will they need extra parts besides the hand guards?

On the newer railed rifles, like the Sig 556 classic swat, they have a monolithic rail system. The upper rail half extends as one piece all the way back on top of the upper reciever. To remove it, seperate your upper from your lower, then slide the bottom rail half back and down to remove it. Then, remove the 3 screws on top of your reciever and the whole top half of the rail will pull out of the gas block and can be removed. Warning, the 3 rail screws are most likely lok tighted, so heat them first with the tip of a soldering iron. Warning #2. The little flip up rear loli pop sight has 3 little wavey washers and a flat washer that provide for a spring type detent. Don't loose those little parts. Do it over a work mat or something.
Now, to go to classic handguards, you will need a set of classic handguards, and the classic upper reciever picatinny rail. It's about a 6" piece of raill and includes loli pop sight. Sig will not sell you this of course because they think we are too stupid to install it. :-) Colorado gun sales sells them for about $135. I bought hte last one they had in stock to do just what you are thinking. While I was there, I added a swiss stock and love it. Write me back if you have any more questions.

A word to the wise, if you're running a classic style rifle and like the weight, I would be wary of the rails. They can add nearly a full pound or more to the front of an already front heavy rifle. My understanding is that the Classic handguard weighs in around 6.5 oz and the railed handguards are around 20 oz. If it's aggressive looks you're after then go for it but if it's simple functionality, I would stick with what you have. Just MHO from someone who used to build "Ninja Rifles!"

Agreed, they are heavy on the 556 but give the 522 a really nice feel.

The rails dont feel that heavy and it adds some good balane to the gun.
