So I'm using Federal bulk, and I get at least one failure to fire in almost every mag.....if I take the "bad" round and put it in my CMMG AR....it works....in fact I almost never get any failures at all in the CMMG AR....any ideas

Are there indentations on the unfired rounds from the firing pin? I had one 522 replaced over the light firing pin strike problem. I would suggest giving the bolt a good cleaning and see if it improves. Some have suggested polishing the sides of the firing pin if you still have issues. Sig is pretty lousy at solving this one if you have to send it in. After 9 months or so I finally got a new rifle after continuing to bother them. Don't send it in if you can avoid it.

thanks for the reply....there is a light indent from the firing pin, but to tell the truth I never examined a fired round to see if the mark is any deeper....I will call Sig....but I'm not sending it in to them.....in the mean time I'll give the bolt a thorough cleaning, and see what happens.

I had the same problem when I first got my Sig 522 and that's why I use only CCI Mini mags or subsonics. It's the ammo, not your rifle. I had the same issue with my Ruger 10/22. The cheaper bulk stuff is very inconsistent. I am at 3K now and climbing without another misfire. Just MHO. Best of luck.

When I had light firing pin strikes with my original Sig 522 they would fire in any other rimfire I had. They would also usually fire on a second attempt. I would use the same lot # of ammo in my 10/22 with no issues. You could also look at the back of the round and see that it made a very light indentation.

The Sig 522 doesn't hit the rim as hard as some other designs but I would try a cleaning and maybe a polish of the sides of the firing pin before giving up on bulk ammo.

My current Sig 522 Swat is sighted in and uses the Federal bulk just fine. I have had maybe 2 failure to fire incidents in 1500 or so rounds and that could easily be the fault of the ammo.

Agree on the Fed bulk. And Remmy T-bolts. Both are incredibly iffy in almost ANY semi. CCI MiniMags - must just be made better.

never had a ftf out of my 522. No matter what ammo I use. One of the reason's I love it so much.

I just bought it brand new a few months ago. Came with the two barrels?

I used to get 2-3 light pin strikes per magazine...

...and have found the cause to my problem.

I manually cycled some ammo and before long noticed that the bolt wouldn’t completely seat as you can see below:

This would explain why the ammo wouldn’t fire with this condition and would produce the light pin strike when the trigger was pulled.
While in this condition, I also noticed that if I were to lightly tap the bolt in (toward the left side of the receiver), the bolt would snap forward.

To see what was going on inside, I hand cycled the ammo until I noticed the unseated bolt again.
This time, I removed the magazine and separated receivers while trying to keep the bolt in its current state.
As I looked through the magwell opening on the bottom of the upper, I could see why the bolt doesn’t completely close:

As you can see, the bolt isn’t centered and the bolt face is resting on the rim of the .22 casing.
That would explain why the bolt would re-seat itself if I were to tap it in.
Looks like the bolt or receiver could be out of spec and a call to Sig CS is in order.

But me being me, I decided to fix the issue myself.

What did you do and what were your results?

It was an easy fix for me.....I removed the firing pin and cleaned out the channel it rides in....I'll do this as part of my normal cleaning process after around 1000 rounds.....

I trimmed part of the cornered edge of the rim recess on the bolt face.
Here's a before and after pic to help explain.

The cut side is the same side that the cartridge rim would hang on the bolt face.
Should the bolt go off-center, the cut will now help guide the cartridge into its seat.

Result: After the modification, I manually cycled through 5 full magazines and had no seating issues.
Then, I went to the range and went through a full box of Federal 550s with zero light pin strikes!

Disclaimer! Although this modification has so far worked for me, I don't recommend anybody do this as it would probably void your warranty!
