Add security sensor to a gun safe?
Just wondering...I hear some people have added them to know when someone goes into the safe since some home security systems log what, when & which sensor was tripped.
Would you put a standard door type on it on the inside and what about a tilt type inside in case someone tries breaking it free and carting off with it?
Have any of you guys done this?
I've seen this done before (and on liquor cabinets, too). Our door sensors and window sensors on the kid's windows are set to "chime" when separated. It could be handy on the safe but frustrating if you need to get in at night for whatever reason because it would trip the alarm or entry delay.
ETA: The sensor shouldn't be more than $100. I doubt the insurance company would recognize the extra measure of security.

I have a seperate "zone" for my gun room - if I had a safe in there I could add a door sensor - You get 60 seconds just like walking in the front door on mine
The way I look at it, the alarm going off may not be a bad thing if I'm going in there in the middle of the night.
Unless you are worried about occupants of the house I would multi-layer everything possible prior to getting anywhere near the safe. If somebody's in my house (or attempting to be) it's good enough to call in the cavalry- why wait till they start working on the safe?
Unless you have your safe on a second system, it probably won't do you much good. If the alarm hasn't sounded before they are standing in front of your safe, then they have probably already bypassed your system.
I could see some value to it if it had a different code than the main system and would be armed at all times. I could be useful to prevent people who have access to the house that shouldn't have easy access to your weapons/valuables. I'm thinking that loser brother in law that comes to stay or contractors ect.
They make things like this, I have it planned for one of my future projects,
Honeywell’s 5870API is a wireless asset protection device designed to guard against theft. It easily affixes to any valuable requiring protection within a home or business, including paintings, flat screens and other electronics, family heirlooms, safes, machinery, equipment and more.
