Sliding glass door security
Besides installing a security bar to stop the door from sliding open, is there anything I can do to secure the door? Are these type of doors a weak spot for entry? Getting into a house w/ some and want to know if anything should be done.
You need to check to be sure proper blocks are installed, so that the glass can't be simply lifted out of the channel. A bar alone won't protect the door if these blocks are missing.
There are other types of locks that can be installed if you don't like the bar. There is one type that can be locked and unlocked by simply using your foot, no key. I haven't seen it sold separately from a particular brand of door, however.
Two other options are roll up shutters, and steel security doors.
Thanks. I haven't moved in yet so I don't have any idea how the doors are currently secured. Just read some online and it looks like screws can be drilled in to prevent the door from having the play needed to lift it off the tracks. Hopefully blocks are in place to prevent this anyway.
I prefer the look of french doors or imitation french doors(only 1 panel opens w/ other panel fixed). Not sure these are any more secure because the glass can be smashed out of these as easily as a slider.
Security laminate on the glass?
Yeah, I'll make a note to look into that. Heard of it but never seen.
I've got these and they work well, also preventing someone from lifting the door off the track far enough to get over the crappy stock lock. From what I've seen this is about the best option out there.

Nice, those look like a good idea and are pretty cheap. Thanks.
wonder if it works decent. not much to look at on the website. shows it for a single door, but i have double slider. so im guessing id have to put one on each door, but does it seem strong enough to keep them from pulling it out
but its better than nothing
These things are solid and work very well. I also have a double slider and yes, you need one on each door. Believe me, I looked high and low for something good for the doors and this was the best I could find. The upper and lower pins keep thieves from raising the doors on the tracks.
maybe ill give them a try, some teens tried to break into the neighbors house last year through the sliders. his daughter was home and screamed when she saw them trying to get in. he has 3 dogs 2 kinda big but they did not seem to mind them. but ran when she started to scream.
