 Marlin 1895G scout mount?

I just bought a Marlin 1895G .45-70 and want to add a scout type mount (it came with XS sights installed). I see that XS makes one and also see one listed by Weaver, both appear to be aluminum. Are there any other options out there (steel?) and which ones seem to work best? I want to use some type of QD rings so I can remove the scope if needed and use the sights as well.

Also, any guidance on what scope to use?

(Sorry, no pics its still in pawn shop jail for a couple weeks before I can pick it up)

I use that system with Leupold quick release rings on my .450 Marlin Guide Gun.

And this scope

I was planning on using the Leupold QRW rings, unless a better option was suggested. Anyone have an opinion on Leupold vs Burris vs ??? (handgun/shotgun scope) for the scope?

I paid $410 OTD which I thought was a good price, especially since it had the XS sights already installed.

The one from XS will more than handle any recoil forces. This one has had everything from mild "cowboy" black powder rounds to some Garrett stuff, not to mention literaly hundreds of my own loads thru it. I used "blue" locktite (don't use red if you ever want to take it apart), and nothing has lossened up. I currently have a fixed "scout" scope on it. It weight more than the holo sight shown, and hasn't had any issues,

I've used the Ashley mount for many years and hundreds of shots through my 1895G. I've experienced no issues with the Leupold QR rings shifting under recoil or any of the slots being deformed. The scope is a Leupold M8 2x20.

Picked the gun up, here it is. Still haven't decided on the mounting situation.

Your rear sight is on backwards.

Yeah, I know, just haven't messed with it yet. I'm not sure I'm going to keep the XS sights, I might go back to the originals and use a more traditional scope mount. Or get the XS mount with the built in rear sight. Still deciding what to do.

I'm with you. My eyes aren't really good enough to do very well with iron sights. I've tried the scout scope setup and can't get used to it, too many years of shooting a conventional scope I guess. I always figured the big advantage of the forward mounted scout scope was for access to the receiver on clip loaded bolt guns.

This is my guide gun, bought it off the EE here. The scope is a Leupold M8 3x.

Can you tell me which sling and buttstock carrier you're using?
Nice looking rig.

XS is pretty much the only game in town unless you want to drill & tap the barrel. WWG uses this set-up

I use the Wild West Guns mounts. They are designed to retain the stock buckhorn sight for use when you pop the scope off. Now that doesn't matter to you as you already have the XS sights,as do I, but it is a great design feature. Clean and solid mount.

Looks like a Skinner Sight on the rear... and it may not be backwards, it could just be that the previous owner put it there to sharpen his view through the peep. Good stuff, I have several of them.

The XS mount is GTG, I have owned several of them. I used them with Warne QD rings.

As someone who has used the scout rifle set up on several different rifles, several Marlins (45-70, 30-30), a model 1917 Enfield and a Remington 700 Scout (custom built in 1985...), may I suggest that you use those excellent Skinner Sights and learn to shoot with those and then decide if you really wish to use the scout scope set up.

I am not being critical of the scout rifle concept, (and I sincerely hope that Colonel Jeff Cooper is seated at the right hand of God, preferably next to Townsend Whelen), it's just that I really tried several different configurations, i.e. Leupold scout scope, Aimpoint, UltraDot, etc. and I found that within 100 yards, the peep sight was just as fast and did not change the balance of the rifle.

If you are really insistent on doing this, PM me and I may still have a used XS mount I can send to you gratis. No promises though, I will have to search for it.

Who built your ammo carrier? Looks like beautiful work, and something I could use for my 45-70.

westernstarleather.com They have some real nice stuff. I bought 1 of these to check it out, and then had to buy another for my matching takedown in .450Marlin. They are that nice.

Very possible. If you look at my 1895 GS, you'll see that the XS ghost ring rear is on backwards. For my eyes, it works better that way.
