Should I be leery about Henry??
I really wanted to get a Big Boy. I have heard great things about them on this site and many others.
I went to a CAS match last week to learn a little more about it before I make some fairly big purchases. I asked everyone there about which rifle to buy and they said to get a Uberti 1873. I did shoot one that had action work and a short stroke kit. I was sweet. But, it would also cost about $1400 for the rifle and action work.
I asked about the Henry, and it was like I started pissing on all of their rifles. The unanimous response was, "they suck." (I got the same response about the Marlin)
Other than the way they load and the weight, why would they "suck?"
I bought a Henry Big Boy .44mag for my Father in law a couple of years ago. The only problem i have had is it does not like to feed SWC consistently. It shoots accurately but not being able to load the SWC consistently is annoying.
I don't know where you heard what you heard/read, but the two Henrys I have haven'thad any problems. On forums like Paco Kelly's Leverguns, and Levergunlovers, they are well though of.
They are fine quality american made rifles.
If you just plan on plinking or hunting, the Henry is a fine rifle.
If you plan on Cowboy shooting, the Henry is about fifth on the list, and you will NOT be happy with it. The Uberti '73 is the top dog for that.
The Henry is a pain to load, heavy, has a long lever throw and hard to slick up. All of those very bad for Cowboy shooting, for any other use, not a factor.
Also, I've never seen anyone shoot one very long, so not sure how well they hold up. A properly slicked up '73 will go for tens of thousands of rounds without issues. Cowboy shooting is very hard on guns.
For Cowboy Action, the Henry has a bad reputation. I borrowed several guns at CAS shoots, including a Rossi, Marlin and '73 copy. I never saw a Henry and that did impact my decision. I wound up buying a "Slicked up" 1873 replica and have zero complaints.
I figure the money I saved on Ruger NMV's instead of USFA or Colt SAA's was good to make up the difference in price. :)
I'm not sure I'd have bought a lever gun. Except for CAS, and I am glad I did! I may wind up with more.
Oh and those big "grabber" sights, excellent at CAS distances. But at 100 yards they are about as big as a 10 or12" plate.
Have fun with whatever you pick.
My only experience is with a tube fed Henry, so go by what has been said above. But Henry is a great company, and makes great rifles, and they stand by their products.
I am sure you can buy the Ferrari, when the dependable mid-range GM/Ford/Chrysler is available and works good. You have to decide what fits for you, and what you want from it.
I've been a 10+ year Cowboy Shooter......I've won two State Championships.
Now.....that being said.......the Uberti 73's make good competition rifles AFTER they have been short stroked and slicked up......Marlin STILL makes a good rifle......Henry makes a good rifle.
The Marlin can be made fairly fast......and is mechanically simple.
The Henry is a good rifle......but is mechanically more complex......and will not be as competitive as a Marlin.
So.......what do you want?........a nice rifle?........to use sometimes for competition? ...........or a strictly competition rifle?
I love the Henry rimfires, but I think the centerfires are bloated, heavy, ugly pigs.

I agree, they don't look nice to me either and I would rather have a Marlin any day of the week. But if the OP likes them then more power to him ,different strokes for different folks.
I also don't like the rim-fires because of the metal they use in the receivers and much rather have a steel Marlin or Browning 22, but for the price the Henry's are almost tempting.
I just cant get myself to pull the trigger on buying a Henry.(Pun intended)
I have one of the .22s, and its great for a two hundred dollar gun. I wouldn't give more than that, as its simply not wort it. They are cheaply made, but they work. mine rides in the truck, and gets beat up, but that's the beauty of it, i don't care.
