I have a couple of questions about some lever actions that have been sitting in my safe for the past few years.
1) I got a Marlin 1894 in .357 (S/N starts with 2013)when my grandpa passed away a couple of years ago. Unfortunately he never told me anything about this gun while he was alive and was curious about age, value, etc. I've shot it a couple times and it's a fun little gun but would like to know something about it, too.
2) I bought a Winchester Model 1894 at a show 5+ years ago (S/N starts with 252) because it was in good shape at what I thought was a good price. What is the age/value of this gun? It's in good shape with just some minor surface scratched on the wood stock.
I can post some pics, if helpful but I thought I would see what the lever action experts had to say first.
As always, thanks for any info that you have!
Your Marlin was made in 1980 ( 2000 - 20 [first two digits of serial number] = 1980)
It's a 1894C, in production from 1979 - 1985.
Value? Without actually looking at the gun I have no clue as to it's exact value and even then it's a guess.
Bluebook shows $400 for one in 100% condition. I don't think the bluebook is always correct, take that price as a rough idea only.
Don't concern yourself too much with the monetary value of a gun passed from your grandfather to you. I have guns that were my grandfathers and fathers...they are priceless to me.
Your Winchester 1894 with serial number starting with 252 was made in 1962 I think.
1962 if it has 7 digits in the serial number.
1902 if it has 6 digits.
WINCHESTER MODEL 1894
Records at the factory, and in some years, estimates,
indicate the following serial numbers were assigned to
guns at the end of the calendar year.
YEAR APPROX. LAST NO.
01 - 233975
02 - 273854
61 - 2500000
62 - 2551921
Thanks for the information. I will cherish the guns and knives I got from my grandpa until it comes time for me to pass them on. I just wish I knew a little bit more about some of them. Thanks again for replying.
Edit: It's especially cool that the Marlin was made in the same year I was born. Makes it that much more special.
