New to doing my own gun work.. Help with Hammers and punches
Can someone give me a link to a read or a general overview of punches and hammers.
Such as the difference between brass and steel punches and ball peen and brass hammers and what to use on what and such..

The hammer isnt real important, I have a 5oz stainless one, and a 4oz brass.. There not going to get abuse, only driving small pins with them...
As far as punches I love me roll pin starter set by schuster, its 2 peices, but has all 4 sizes...
then a nice set of steel roll pin punches and a set of flat face brass punches will be fine...
Model 1 sells a set for 15 bucks..
Do you use a brass hammer with brass punches and a stainless with roll pin punches or does it matter??

Using a brass hammer on your punches will only track up the face of the hammer. A good quality 4 and 8 oz.ball pein will handle 95% of your gun work. A dead solid surface is essential, it cuts down on punch and hammer bounce and when they bounce, you damage things.
A hockey puck makes a good benchblock if cash is tight.
