Help with finding stock for rem700

I have a R700 SPS Tac that I've been slowly putting together. After installing the bipod I noticed that the front of the stock pushes up and makes contact with the barrel. It may not be that much of an issue but I've been looking around for a good stock anyway. Any suggestions for a budget stock with a price tag that's not going to get me an ass kicking from my wife?

If you like the Hogue stock, they make a fully aluminum chasis stock that will feel like the one you have on there now. It has an aluminum internal frame that extends forward to the swivel to keep it from bending and touching the barrel.

E-bay Hogue stock $199.99

The Choate Ultimate whatever stocks are inexpensive and free float the barrel as well. Guys will tell you they are crap. As a disclaimer, if I had to do it all over again, I would have saved my money for a great stock, but at the same time, I like my Ultimate Varmint just fine. Its inexpensive but HEAVY as hell.

E-bay Choate stock $110.00

I own both of these stocks and I like them. There are definately better ones out there, and guys will tell you that, but these are the ones I can comment on

a better Choate stock

bell and carlsons

eta: I had one of the Choate Tactical stocks. They are heavy and usually require a shorter rear action screw but are pretty solid. They have pretty good reviews if you google it. I use the B&C Medallist now and am happy with it. Remington put them on many factory rifles now.

Keep an eye out on eBay or classifieds for a take-off PSS or 5R stock. The factory Remington stock for these is actually a HS Precision PST012. Great stock with a comfortable palm swell, aluminium bedding, and very rigid for free floating. It's more or less the same stock used on the M24 SWS (minus the adjustable LOP, which supposedly has a tendency to break anyway).

The sps tac comes with a hogue overmolded stock I'm assuming this isn't the same one?

And thanks for the suggestions all.

correct, not the same unit. The ebay unit has a full-length aluminum bedding block, which improves the rigidity of the stock. Your current stock does not include this feature.

I've seen guys remove a little material along the inside of the barrel channel and epoxy in an aluminum rod to stiffen the forend.
Boyds makes some great rifle stocks for not a lot of money if you want to go laminate...very ridig and inletted well.

Watch the EE for HS precision stocks, though I will tell you on two rem700's I've put in HS precision stocks there was some minor work necessary to keep the barrel from contacting with a loaded bipod. We are talking very, very lightly however.

I'll also second bell and carlson––assuming you opt for those with aluminum bedding blocks as well.

another +1 for B&C medalist stock.

They're on sale at stockys right now and I'm having the wife order me one by the end of the month; for the exact rifle you speak of. I have been reading from many H-S stock owners who got a medalist model stock and say they feel the quality is slightly above their H-S. I haven't owned either but this is what I have read from quite a few people on quite a few boards. A common complaint with H-S stocks is the swivel studs ripping out (which is easily remedied by unscrewing them, putting on epoxy, and reinstalling them WITHOUT over tightening). The B&C medalist stocks have a full length aluminum frame which the swivel studs anchor into.

My 700 sps tac gets in on Tuesday. If my wife wasn't waiting until the 15th, I would already have my B&C on order and hopefully avoid even having to use the flimsy hogue. To me, for the $200 and a month or so wait, it's totally worth it. It has aluminum bedding blocks so you won't need to worry about bedding.

It's up to you but this is the route I'm headed. Great price, good stock, good features. No McMillan.....but neither is the price.

Thanks for the help guys. Thinking of going the medalist, seems to be popular with you guys. Just need to find one on ebay.

This may be because I avoid ebay like the plague when buying items like this. But I would highly recommend going with stockystocks.com. The sale price they have right now is one of the best prices you'll find anywhere and although they are out of stock (pun), you can still back order at the sale price and it should get to you within a short period of time. You also have the added benefit of ordering from a reputable dealer so should you have any issues, you can easily return the stock for a new one.

If you prefer ebay, that's your choice; as is the stock that you choose to 'upgrade' to. But I would highly urge you to take advantage of the sale price at stockys right now; I know I will be. Regardless, I hope you enjoy whatever you choose. I have been staring at pictures of the medalist everyday. I can't wait to put it on order. The 15th is so far away!

This is what I did with my SPS Tactical.

+1 on that! I have my 5R PST012 bedded with Seekins Precision DBM and a Karsten cheek piece and absolutely love it! I always tell folks that the wide palm swell is the selling point for me because I have gorilla-like hands, so it suits me just right. Although, I did just see that HS Precision stock with the thumbhole; kind of reminds me of a KMW Sentinel minus all of the cool KMW goodies (obviously). I think they are PST083 and PST084 (same stock, just adjustable everything). I would want to hold one in person before I even considered selling my PST012. Then again, for the price, I would not be far from a Manners or many others…this is starting to sound like a good problem to have!

+1 for the B&C Medalist from Stockeys, I have 2 of them. also went ahead and bought the drop in bottom metal. Its expensive but not as expensive as buying a different DBM and having to get it milled out to fit.

Another one for B&C medalist stock

Def a nice stock mine just came in a few days ago but you can def tell it is a nice piece a lot more rigid then the stock over mold. I wouldn't waste your time trying to modify the over mold and just buy yourself a good stock. Stockys is great, I will go ahead and tell you just about everyone is sold out of the B&C stock so there will be a little waiting to get one.

I have the 700 SPS Varmint and the stock on it is even worse than the Hogue overmolded. Ditched it for a Bell and Carlson M40 Medalist and I love it. Good combination between sporter/tactical, plenty rigid and fits me well.

Worth the money.

Bell abd Carlson makes a solid stock. Take a look at their tactical line.
