Which Rifle to Choose - 6.5 Creedmoor vs 308s

So I'm fairly torn on what my long term precision bolt action rifle should be. I plan on building this rifle up exactly as I want it and keeping it for a very long time.

My wishlist on the final configuration of the rifle is:
- Very good stock
- DBM with removable mags
- Heavy barrel
- Camo painted
- Suitable for 1000 yard range (a new range is going up near my house soon)

I've been looking at a few different Savage models. I really like these models because they have either 2 or all 3 of my requirements straight from the factory. So far I've picked out the following as contenders:

1) Savage 12 LRP in 6.5 Creedmoor
http://www.savagearms.com/firearms/model/12LRP/
Pros: 6.5 Creedmoor which is supposed to be great at long range, still factory available ammo, solid stock, long heavy barrel
Cons: Don't like stock as well as McMillan, would have to add DBM eventually, would have to paint stock eventually

2) Savage 10 FCP-SR in 308
http://www.savagearms.com/firearms/model/M10FCP10
Pros: Factory DBM, factory painted stock, long heavy barrel, factory installed picatinny rail, factory threaded muzzle
Cons: .308 performance not quite as good as 6.5 Creedmoor at long range, don't like stock as well as McMillan

3) Savage 10 FCP McMillan in 308
http://www.savagearms.com/firearms/model/10FCPMcMILLAN/
Pros: Factory installed McMillan stock, long heavy barrel
Cons: .308 performance not quite as good as 6.5 Creedmoor at long range, would have to add DBM eventually, would have to paint stock eventually

So what do you guys think? Do you agree with the (3) rifles that I'm focusing on? Am I missing something? Am I missing a rifle that you would add to this list? My initial purchase price would be around $1k. Thanks!

3) Savage 10 FCP McMillan in 308

Cons: .308 performance not quite as good as 6.5 Creemoor at long range, would have to add DBM eventually, would have to paint stock eventually

This!

Then pick up a 6.5 barrel and headspace gauges and have both......I prefer the 6.5 Lapua, But if you don't reload, get whatever is more common.

Or....pick up a Savage action and piece together exactly what you want the first time.

Just an afterthought, The Savage 12 action used in the #1 choice is a better choice for building a precision rifle. So that rifle, with the McMillan stock you so much desire= a winner.

Unfortunately for me I bought three. 308s before I bought my 6.5CM. Hindsight being 20/20 and all I most certainly wouldn't have bought all of them. For a bolt gun 6.5 CM is more fun to shoot, just as cheap to reload, very good factory. ammo is available, easier to shoot accurately . Any down side there might be (and I don't know of any) are far outweighed by the upsides in my humble opinion. Go with 6.5CM and don't look back.

Exactly. The Creedmoor is better than the 308 ballistically and its easy to load for and factory ammo is cheaper than comparable 308 loadings. You can always get a 308 barrel down the road but get the Creedmoor first.

Glad to hear you guys are thinking the 6.5 Creedmoor as well as that was how I was leaning. The action on the 12 series looks a lot stronger than the 10 series as well.

If I bought the 12 LRP I would just add a base, rings, optics, bipod and go shoot it.

Are there any other 6.5 Creedmoor rifles in this price range that I should be looking at?

6.5s are great. You'll be very happy with the creedmoor.

I would stick with the Savage in that price range.

If you plan on hunting the Ruger Scout is on sale for $799 at Cabela's. It is a hair heavier than Cooper would have liked but it has a forward mounted rail and a flash suppressor. It would be interesting to see ballistics if they came out with the same thing in a 16” barrel. High pressure 180s are the equivalent of a 30-06 and have killed all of the big game type animals in Africa other than Buffalo and Elephant. Also has killed every big game animal in North America.

Now about this bench rifle you are talking about. Get the Creedmore.

Anyone here hunt with the Creedmoor? I'm tempted to take a look at one but my rifles pull double duty for hunting purposes.

260 Remington Hunting bullets.
I am not into hunting but know there is a lot of hunting done with the 260 and that bullets are available for that. Limits exist.

I've been shooting 6.5mm Creedmoor in different rifle matches for a couple years now. I have been very happy with the cartridge!

My current match rifle.
