I am looking to put together a rimfire rifle to use in lieu of my .308 in order to save money and/or reloading time when work gets busy. Would you go with a .22lr or .22 mag? I want to at least be able to shoot it at 100 yards, possibly 200 yards. I realize a .22lr would be ok at 100 yards. I am just curious what people's opinions are on the two calibers.

Unless there is some reason for you to want .22mag, like you have a revolver in that caliber already, then I would stick to .22lr.
I'll be building up a .22lr AR upper to clone my 6.5 Grendel Upper for use much like you stated.
The cost saving of 22lr vs 22mag are worth going lr alone.
There also is a greater selection of good rifles in .22lr.

What kind of .308 do you have?

You might also think about .17hmr. It really shines as a "long range" rimfire.

A bit unorthodox I know, but have you considered a 223 Remington? My 14lb setup has practically no recoil (perfect for training), and ammo costs are substantially less than other, larger calibers.

A .22lr at 100 yards with a fixed 4x scope is a nice simulator for a medium ranged .308 at say 500-600 yards.

I would not suggest going for 22WMR - it costs almost as much as 223, and it's less reliable feeding. That long, thin case is a bitch to stuff in the throat.

I would go for a 22LR, since you'll be able to find challenging shooting conditions in more places; also, put a can on it for a spooky quiet time shooting.

The downside to 22LR, though, is you won't get as much experience reading mirage or seeing trace (since you'll be shooting at shorter ranges). For that, you could use the already suggested 223 as a trainer.

I pretty much only shoot my 22 at 200 yards anymore. Lots of fun and can be challenging with just a little wind.

I shoot my 10/22 at 300 (and somewhat unsuccessfully 400) and it's GREAT practice.....

very good times

Savage MK II FV-SR is my trainer for my 700. Here in Utah we have a 'Utah Cheapskate 22' competition that about 30-40 of us every month go out and compete from 25 yards out to about 250 yards. Lots of fun and great training for long range.

Thanks for the input, it looks like it will be .22lr. Now to figure out a setup.

I'll second the Savage MK II. I was shooting mine to 200 yards yesterday and was consistently landing shots on a 6 in gong.

I have really enjoyed the 10/22 so far.. With a few mods that you can do yourself and a good barrel with some wolf MT they can be made into a tack driver..

One of my Remington trainers. It's a 40-X USMC in a black AICS, as pictured. I recently moved it from the AICS to a HS-Precision stock and put a 40-XB into the AICS so the bolt was closer to that of my Remington 700 in 308.

I think I am gonna pick up a Savage 22LR trainer.

Would you guys pay an extra $200 to get the MKII TRR-SR? It seems to have a more Tactical stock over the standard FV-SR and a 22" barrel vs. a 16.5". Or would you just get the MKII FV-SR and get an aftermarket stock, if so which one?

MKII FV-SR- $269 at Buds

MKII TRR-SV - $477 at Buds

In my experience the shorter barrel is more accurate over the longer barrel.

Because .22s develop just about all they've got in 16" or so and shorter barrels are much stiffer.

Base, bottom metal and trigger guard are all from DIP (Diversified Innovative Products.) I got the 25 MOA cant rail. And the rings are Weaver 6 hole tacticals in low, but if I had to do it over again, I would get the Burris XTRs in low. The weaver one does not grab the rail fully. (I blame the Weaver rings.)

...to the tune of double the deflection for a given transverse load when moving from a 16" to a 20" barrel.

If you're taller than 5 foot you will need a stock replacement on the first option. I have one with dual aperture sights and a loop sling and the LOP is an issue for me at a mere 5'7".

I would put money on you not being mechanical accuracy limited by either rifle. Mine does X rings on high power targets with Eley. I am not that skilled.

Yes it is that stock but unfortunately you cannot use the factory trigger guard and floor plate. I bought these for the Boyds and they are well worth the money:

So I have 2 Savage MarkII 5 round mags, and both didn't make it through my first round of shooting the gun. The tabs that hold the mag together started to let go and allow the mag to separate a little, which then flung all 5 rounds back out of the mag. Is this normal?

Definitely not. Call Savage up tomorrow and tell them about this, they should hook you up with new mags.

i just bought this:

anschutz mpr 64

DIP 25MOA scope base.

I also bought a remington 700 5r in 308.

i had a march 5-40 d40v56fiml scope purchased for the remington but i've run it on both.

i have a leupold vxII 6-9 EFR scope that put on the MPR

for me, its a bit harder to shoot the MPR at 100 yards than the remington at 300, im gonna try the 64 at 300 and the ballistics indicate that it will be similar to shooting the 700 at 700+ yards.

my biggest issue now is i want another high end scope so to run on the MPR, with the march, i dont need a spotting scope.

i just installed a timney trigger on the 700 and its almost as nice as the trigger on the 64

when i go to the range i shoot both
