 HK MR556 conversion vs HK416

I am wanting a HK piston AR with a 10.4" barrel just like the HK416. The 2 routes I know to go are:

1. Get my HK MR556 16.5" barrel cut down to 10.4 inches, re-profiled and rethreaded by a qualified gunsmith. Mod or replace the gas block with the HK 416 gas block. = $2,800

2. Buy a HK 416 10.4" upper and put it on a HK MR556 lower. = $4,500-$5,250

These will never go full auto with me, so the full auto BCG in the 416 does not affect my decision. My question is besides the chrome lined barrel in the 416, what will be the difference in the 2 above weapons? Are the barrel grooves on the barrel different on the 416 & MR556?

Thanks in advance for any help.

If you just want to have a clone of a shorty HK416, I'd go with the complete MR556 and get it cut down. IIRC, no gas block replacement would be necessary, just an intense reprofile and cut down. The threading would be irrelevant, since you're going to have it re-done.

Also, I would dump the OEM pistol grip and stock, and throw a SOPMOD and TD Battlegrip on it.

I love there stock and grip for me but everyones hands are different. The gas block does need to be modded or replaced when going down to a 10.4" barrel from a 16.5" barrel.

I meant to say the barrel grooves in my OP instead of threads. Same 1/7 twist?

Not sure how much of a clone it will be since every part on it will be authentic HK.

Is there any progress on this project?

If I remember correctly augee the gasblock will need to be modified slightly in that the dump valve/forward port will need to be welded shut in order for a 14.5/16 inch gas block to work reliably on a 10.4 inch gun.

Yes, I went the 416 upper route. I hope to have my approved tax stamp for the MR556 lower back from the ATF in July or August sometime.

You are correct.
