Tell me about the Omni Los Angeles Hotel at California Plaza and the area surrounding it.
I'm going to be staying here for a trip next week. I'm curious about any info you all could give me. In particular, how safe the surrounding areas are, if there are any cool bars nearby, and anything else there is to do. If there are things to do for folks under the age of 21, I could use that info too for some of my friends. Thanks!
This is your hotel, right?

Its smack in the middle of downtown LA. It's a place I wouldn't be walking around in after 10pm or so. No CCW reciprocity, can't legally carry a gun on you. There's a city ordinance for pocket folding knives, no longer than 3 inches i believe.
Skid row is ~10min by foot south-east-ish from your hotel
Plenty of stuff to do during the day, perfectly safe then. Just don't cross the river and keep going east, it gets progressively more ghetto after that. Its only at night when everyone leaves that the bums come out.
China town is north across the 101 freeway. Slightly north-west you have the hollywood stars sidewalk thingy.
Your hotel should have lots of the touristy brochures for you to look at.
Thats all I can think of for now.
eta: Oh, bars... get drunk beforehand. Then go to a bar and prepare for $10 drinks

Lots of bars in that area.
As stated, not an area you wan't to walk around in after dark. The complex itself is nice and has good security. Several resturants and I think one club on site. There are a lot of venues for nighttime entertainment within easy driving distance. It all depends on what you want. This site has some pretty good info.
LA info
This is a college paid for event. We will be taking buses and won't have access to cars unless we get cabs. I picked up a fifth of bulleit rye to keep me warm at night. The 21 year olds in our group will most likely be drinking in the hotel and then having a nice drink or two each night at the up scale bars.
omni hotel is on the better side of dwntwn la, you are across the street from disney concert hall, which is a neat place to see.
theres a lot to see walking around downtown la, go to hill street for the jewelry district and get your sweetie something nice.
go to angels flight, check out the bradbury building (you have seen it in many movies)
theres a good german sausage place called "wurstkuche"
check out olvera street for historical mexican culture, phlillipes restuarant for french dip sammich, chinatown nearby too.
go to orochon ramen resturant in little tokyo, for hottest ramen
theres a knife shop where oj simpson bought the knife he killed his wife with
Make sure you get yourself a French Dip at Cole's. Not Philippe's. Only Cole's
Thanks guys! About to board the bus in an hour.
The water court at Cal Plaza was rated by LA Magazine as one of the most relaxing mediation places in downtown, and it's right outside the hotel. The museum of comtemporary art is right there in the complex. Take Angels Flight (hillside trollley) down the hill from Cal Plaza and Grand Central Market is across the street. They have some good food at good prices. LA Library is right down the hill, Disney concert Hall and other theaters walking distance , theres some clubs and reatruants there also. Not a bad area even at night, just stay in the highrise area. I've done tons of night work there, just stay west of Hill St unless you know the ins and outs of Little Toyko. staple Center, LA Live and the Convention Center short bus or cab ride with allot to do and a lot of nightlife

That trolly thing was awesome. I ended up going to a revolving sushi bar one night and drinking saki for the first time. Also ate a few times at the Grand Central Market. There was a little hole in the wall mexican joint right across from the trolly that was cheap and extremely good.
Mostly we made hotel security earn their pay check. I have a feeling they will not book PAC12 bands ever again.
Overall I much preferred the Westin last year, because it was too big for security to stop the wild parties.

This was definitely a better culinary trip though.
