Confirmation needed that I have read the California handgun statutes correctly
So if my read is correct, I can travel to California from Utah on motorcycle with a S&W M&P handgun (7+1) so long as it is unloaded and locked in a case? What if it's locked in an aluminum case (Pannier) on the bike? Or must it be locked in its own separate case inside the Pannier?
Handgun in question is M&P Shield - it's new so it's not on the approved list. Is that a problem? Should I take an M&P9c (12+1) or a revolver instead?
Any assistance greatly appreciated. I don't want to be a lawbreaker.
THanks! SOA
Non roster is not an issue as the roster pertains to the sale of handguns and not ownership, so you are gtg there. Generally speaking, having the gun unloaded and in a container not accessible while driving is fine. The capacity of the mag is less then 10 so you are fine there. I dont think you should have any issues.
Is a pannier considered a trunk or a glove compartment? I'm not sure on that one. You may legally transport a gun in your trunk but not in your glove compartment. Is it easily accessible from the drivers seat?
You may want to consider a locked case to be on the safe side. A padlocked soft sided zipper case is fine for transporting handguns and will save you a little more space than a hard plastic case.
