Middletown Sportsmans Club
I joined today so I can use the 200 yard rifle range. Any of you guys members?
I've never shot clay birds except for on my uncles farm and would like to learn about trap, skeet and sporting clays. I've got a sweet 1187 premier trap and would love to put it to work.
Thanks,
I worked there for almost 10 years and my grandfather, James D. "Buck" Ingram used to be the club president back in the sixties. It is a great club for shotgun sports and the rifle range, while basic, is fairly nice. I have to say that I have not shot there for some time and have heard that safety and supervision have increased dramatically in an effort to rid itself of some riff raff. I have heard complaints of RSO's being all over some about "rapid" semi-auto fire, but again I have not been there in the past 5 years. Wasn't like that when I worked there from '91-2000.
I will warn you to get off of the range in twilight hours as depending upon the current manager's policies (I shot during the tenures of Daryl Landwehr, a douchebag of the highest order, and Chuck Hazellett, a great manager and the man I wish were still there).
Good people and the staff is accomodating. I made a small fortune, for a teenager, pulling Sporting Clays there as the members who shot made good money and I was good at my job. It's one of those very fun jobs you had as a kid and wished could still pay the bills of a husband and father of two with a mortgage
ETA: personal feelings toward previous club managers and correction of typos
Current Member –– Have not been for a few months due to weather and time issues.
No problem with any of the RSO's –– Great guys and never a problem –– They do a great job of making sure the Range is safe –– one of the main reasons I do not go the the Ohio Range in Spring Valley.
200 Yard Range –– have not used officially –– I have shot the steel hangers with my rifles while dialing in the rifles at the 100 yard range –– I dial in my scope at 100 yards for hunting.
No problem using the 200, never seen any rules to you have to pass a test to shoot there –– Just a longer walk to hang targets (I have actually seen some shooters drive their vehicles to the 200 yard rang
Management has never been a serious problem with me.

I'm an active member. I honestly pay the membership because I like the club and wish to see it succeed. I don't use the range enough to get my monies worth out of it. I shoot more trap and sporting clays than anything else. I love it there.
Dont get me wrong OP, MSC is a GREAT club and I would shoot there today if I didn't move to a different area of OH. I recommend it fully and you won't be disappointed. IIRC, the current president is Gary Roberson and I can personally attest to that man's character and class. D. Landweher, the jerk was the club manager before C. Hazellet. Again, I do not know the current club manager. I am just glad to see a lot of the riff raff members have moved on. It is thanks to these people MSC has RSOs now. Funny how we never needed them before.
In closing, you WILL meet great people and develop long lasting relationships with people you would trust your children with. Good luck and happy shooting.

MSC member for 9 years and counting and there have been range officers there since day one, I joined in 2004 when Fairfield screwed the pooch.
Abe Little the main RO and the other guys will let you shoot as fast as you want as long as you are hitting the berms. You put rounds in the ground in front of the targets or in the tree line over the berms, expect to get talked to about it. We wouldn't need range officers if people were not such assholes and idiots. But a few jackasses ruin it for everybody although as busy as the range is, they are needed if for no other reason than to time a cease fire every 20 minutes and make sure nobody is down range before calling the range hot. I avoid the place on the weekends when waiting for a bench to shoot is common. People pay to join the club to use the rifle/pistol range and many improvements have been made in the time since I joined. But rifle/pistol is still treated like the red headed stepchild of the club.
The Manager of the Club is Mike Erter. He is a decent guy as far as I can tell. The jackass before damn near put the club out of business stealing right and left. His name was Pat something, I don't remember his last name.
Current President is Richard Smith.
It's the best range around other than Miami Rifle and Pistol but MRP is too far from me when MSC is right in my back yard.
Hey Gaspipes its been a long time since I seen you. The last time MSC made an appearance here it started a sh!t storm. As I remember they wanted both our heads. Yes MSC is the best range to shoot at around here, if they would only put a 1/4 of the money they into the range that they put into the top area it would be a better range. May be I see you there again someday.
Thanks guys. I went today and shot on the 200 yard range for five hours. Had a great time and met nice people. I cant wait to go back.
I've heard of this place. How do you get to shoot there? Do you need to be a member? Any info would be a great help. Thanks.
Membership needed for range. No membership needed, (discount sometimes if you are) for trap, skeet, sporting clays.
I really need to join since I only live a few minutes away but the only time I ever have to shoot is if I take a day off work.

Hey Jeff, how have you been?
Yeah they didn't care to get challenged on their BS that's for sure. But the good guys won that battle.
I haven't been out there in a couple three weeks. The last time I went and the temp was 50+ degrees I guess guys had cabin fever because it was damn crowded for a weekday in the afternoon. What they should be considering is ways to expand the range. If they aren't going to do that, they need to consider capping the membership IMO.
