Here's a short list of stuff that's useful year round. We usually stock up on batteries during this time, and of course it's a good time to replace those coolers for summer.
• Batteries (excluding automobile or boat batteries)
o Cell phone batteries
o Flashlights
• Tarpaulins, plastic sheeting, plastic drop cloths, and other flexible waterproof sheeting
• Bungee cords, rope
• Duct tape
• Gas or diesel fuel tanks or containers
• Nonelectric food storage coolers
• Bottled water
• Weather band radios and NOAA weather radios
• Cell phone chargers
And of course it's a good time to buy a generator (under $1K)
• Portable generators and generator power cords
• Inverters and inverter power cables
I have yet to find a retailer that actually honors this tax holiday. Anyone have the same experience?

Most of the major retailers - target, lowe's, home depot, etc normaly participate and advertise it heavily. At least in my area.
