I went to remove my castle nut to install a Magpul sling plate and realized it is staked. I have never dealt with that before and don't want to jack something up. Can anyone out there help?

I had one that was staked and I just used a brass punch to bump it back and then it came right off. Your gonna scratch your castle nut but it should be anything crazy.

be very careful becauase when you turn the castle nut a 1/4 turn a very small spring will fly out if you are not very careful.

Where are you located? I might can help.

Also, who is the manufacturer? Some will LocTite their castle nuts AND stake them.

I think that's referring to the spring for the detent on the rear take-down pin. By loosening the castle nut, you will also be loosening the receiver end plate, which is responsible for capturing the spring on an AR with a carbine receiver extension. IIRC, the spring's at least a 3 inches long, and not under immense strain, so it shouldn't go flying, but you do want to keep an eye on it. It will also be annoying to get back in the right way. Had a tendency to kink up on me, if memory serves.

You may also want to grab an automatic center punch. It'll make staking the new sling plate pretty painless.

I am in Shelbyville and would be very grateful for some assistance if anyone is nearby. It is an LMT lower.
