Needs to make my shotgun barrel shorter

IIRC somebody asked about how short they could make their barrel. Definitely not interested in getting in trouble, so what was the legal way of doing it? I want to turn my 835 into a 590 on steroids, I'm guessing that the mag extension Mossberg is using on the 930 will work on the 835, then I just need a shorter barrel. 3 1/2" buckshot loads are impressive, and if somebody breaks into my house, I really really want to impress them.

Not sure. I am sure someone will be along shortly that knows. In the meantime here is my 3.5" 12 ga with 18.5" barrel. I dont have any 3.5" ammo though.

It's my understanding that the barrel needs to be over 18" (most of the time people go with 18.5" to be safe) and the shotgun itself needs to be over 26" in length to not be considered a SBS. Although you're not seeming to want to go that route it's also my understanding if you wanted to go shorter you're unable to do so in Indiana, as Indiana will not allow SBS's.

Keep it at 18.5".

A good way to check it after you are done is to close the breech and make sure an 18.5" dowel rod makes it to the end

18 inches is the legal minimum barrel length for a shotgun and the absolute minimum OAL is 26 inches.

So you can cut it without any hassles as long as you don't go to short? I was also under the impression that it was 18 1/2" from the end of the chamber, or is does the chamber count too?

18" minimum from the face of the bolt when in the closed position to the muzzle. As mentioned above, 18.5" just to be safe.

Allow me to dissent here and ask why you're using 3-1/2" loads when 2-3/4" loads meet the minimum 12" penetration (and then some) while being more controllable.

If it is simply overkill for the sake of overkill (a la .700WTF), then by all means proceed.

Not to mention that using 3.5 loads over shorter loads decreases your mag capacity.

If you need help cutting it down, give me a call. We can cut it down and put a nice crown on the barrel.

Have you seen the loads available? One 3 1/2" has twice the shot of a 2 3/4" or as I like to think of it, givin the target both barrels. I also plan to get a mag tube extension for it as an 18 1/2 length is still longer than the tube so I won't be cutting down on capacity. I might order the extension they use on the 930 and match the barrel length to that which might make th barrel closer to 20". At most I might get 1 or 2 extra shells in.

I'm not sure if I want to cut this one or order the 18 1/2" from Mossberg. A choked 28" has uses too, and with a short factory barrel I could throw one of their heat shields on to complete the look. Really just depends on if I get cheap and impatient.

I might get a "Crime Stoppers" bumper sticker to put on the butt stock, just for the lulz.

BTW: Cabelas has a good selection of 3 1/2" buck shot.

I think the 18.5" barrel is actually a 590 barrel and is chambered for 2 3/4" 3" but I might be wrong.

Take him up on this. He helped me put the rail on my SBR about 4 years ago. Almost like he knew what he was doing!

I would encourage you to order an additional bbl....then you still have the long bbl if you want to hunt or something.

I just saw an article where the the author did some work to a 590A1, and one of the upgrades was a mag tube extension from Choate. I looked them up and they have tubes that will give you from 1-5 shells depending on length.
