I have a CMMG M4 that I will be using for Law Enforcement. I need some suggestions on a good folding rear sight (front is fixed) and a weapon light. Thanks for the help.

I would get a differnt manufactuer rifle but beyond that: go over to lightfighter and read some of the info over there. Youll get info from people who are not hobby gunner but actually may use their rifle on a daily, weekly basis.

What is your area of operations like. Urban, rural, suburbia? IE what range are you going to be doing target engagment. Is it going to mostly be inside of structures and what not or out in open fields. If your holding a perimiter 50 yards off vs trudging through acres of dense woods makes a huge difference in equipment choice.

Surefire for the light but the model will depend on the previous questiont Buy once cry once.?
Troy folding for the rear is my go to (see eotech commnet below as to why this is important to not go cheap on if your running an eotech)
Aimpoint (whatever model you like), always on, years worth of runtime. I would Eotechavoid like a nasty HIV infested hooker. Eotech has shitty reliability and the fact it turns off.
Sling go with a quality 2 pt or single pt depending on what type of work youll be doing. (I run a single point but generally not going through the woods looking for people (urban LE).)

Seriously I can go on for probably an hour on each item but everything really depends on what your AO is like.

And fInally what does your policy say you can do/modify etc? Does someone have to sign off on it.

The Troy folders work great for irons. Consider tridium on the front post and tridium on the rear folder for lowlight/night fire. Believe me, you need it.

Regarding the lights, if you live anywhere near St. Louis, I could show you:

A Surefire Executive Defender mounted in an LT-707

A Surefire Mini-Scout mounted in the LT-752

A Surefire M910A with LaRue QD Mount.

As you can see, I am partial to Surefire and LaRue Tactical mounts. They are great lights, but expensive. Quality mounts are expensive, but worth the money. For my duty rifle, I do not mind spending the extra scratch for quality equipment that I know won't fail.

Are you going to use a RDS (red dot sight) on the weapon or just hard irons?

I've carried some form of rifle in my car for 13 years now. The best, fastest iron sight I have found is
the Troy BattleSight Rear Tritium Di-Optic Aperture (folding, not fixed). The sight picture is so easy to line up its scary.

I don't think you can do much better than Troy for the rear sight. The Knights are are sweet but Troy is cheaper and just as rugged/servicable. The MATech sights are cheap, readily available, and work but they do have a few durability issues.

I too would avoid Eotech. I know several guys who have had problems. Aimpoint has always been excellent. I really like the microdot. I don't see a problem with CMMG if it has proven to be reliable to you. You should have at least a thousand rounds through it without serious or recurring problems. I just looked at the Troy diamond sight on another patrol rifle a few weeks ago. If I was doing another build with irons I would absolutely get one. As for a light, there are many options. Go to Brownells with your discount and you'll find a plethera of lights. Surefire is great, but they've gone full retard on some of their prices. You don't need a $600 light on a $700 rifle. Keep it realistic on optics too. Even the snipers wearing their ninja pajamas rarely if ever take a shot over 75 yards. Patrol guys are much closer.

There is wisdom and some caveats here as well. I have both; however I never have trusted my Eotech the way I do my Aimpoint. That's probably me, as several people I work with use them, and I've been reluctant to sell mine.

You can have too much light...500 lumens sounds fantastic until you are searching a house with white, semi-gloss walls.

Regarding shot distance, what does your PD qualify at, and are there any limitations on your ranges of engagement? We qualify out to 200 yrds. Do you have a Home Depot? Schnucks Grocery store or similar box store? We had a shooting 22 years ago at our high school graduation. Engagement for that particular event was minimum 250 yrds from the one guy (area SWAT member) who had a rifle in his car.

True, most road dogs won't go HOG/"sniper", but they may have to reach out beyond the "typical" engagement range. That's why I argued and received permission to place magnifiers on personally owned rifles.
