After nearly a year, my wife and I have finally moved to TN.

It took over 10 months to sell our house in VA, and the day we were moving out, the contract we had put on a house in TN fell apart. The inspection revealed some serious plumbing problems with the house, and the owner didn't want to fix them. So we had to start hunting for another place fast. Do you know how hard it is to look for a house 400 miles away?

We made a quick trip to my sister-in-laws place in Fall Branch with a full 26 foot U-Haul to put in storage here, then our realtor showed us 14 houses in two days. Speed house hunting FTW! She would have saved us some time by showing us the next to last house from day two. That was the one we picked, and was definitely the best of all.

We've got the storage unit emptied, and a house full of boxes now. The joy of unpacking begins. There is still another storage unit in Virginia that we have to go back in a few weeks and move here too. Ugh, 400 miles in a U-Haul.

We're just about 7 miles out from Greeneville, and it's so quiet here. And no traffic lights every 300 feet. In time I will be looking for some gun shops (of course) and a place to go shooting, after getting this place squared away.

I sure hope the TN hometown forum folks are as nice as the people in this area are. I am not used to polite and friendly people anymore. Everyone we have met has been just so helpful and we end up talking forever about all kinds of things.

Well, off to hook-up a washer and dryer quickly.

Welcome!

I believe you'll find East TN folks in general to be the most helpful & polite of us all, IMO. Must be that mountain thing, you may not have anyone but a neighbor or two within 4-5 miles so you tend to help one another.

Widner's used to be up in the Johnson City area but I don't know if they do retail & are in fact still running. Others will be along to tell you which stores are worth seeing. I know lower East TN but virtually nothing about upper East TN.

Reese is working a Kingsport gun show this weekend, so there should be a gun show or two to do in your area.

Get up on a mountain top up there & watch the sun come up some morning. Nothing like it, IMO.

Welcome, you are close to the Davy Crockett birthplace. My favorite spot in that area. Idk about gunshops up there though, I'm in Middle-Tn. You are in beutiful country though!

I don't live to far from you. I'm in Johnson city. Welcome to our end of the state. I shoot 3gun in Greeneville just about every month at WWW.tac2.net. hope to see you out. Holler if you need anything.

Can't help you too much because things have changed out there since I left Johnson City a few years ago. The gun store/ indoor range there burned out and Widener's shut down its store to walk-in sales. I think the firearm refinishers CCR are right there in your neck of the woods. FWIW, you're moving to my favorite part of the state natural beauty-wise. Cherokee National Park, Roan Mt, lake Watauga, etc. Then you have some great areas right across the NC border like Nantahala & Grandfather Mt. Plus, you're a short drive to Gatlinburg.

Based on the description, I'm assuming you were in NoVa? I lived in VA a couple of years ago, though in the Cville area where it was really nice.

I feel your pain with the U-Haul, we moved to TN from New England last summer... shopped for a house from 1200 miles away and drove down playing Smokey and The Bandit with my wife in the car, me driving a fully loaded Penske truck. Good times.

We moved from Newport News, it was 414 miles. 1200 miles in a rental sounds much worse.

I love it here already. We were wandering the property line yesterday afternoon (long walk uphill to get back to the house) and met 4 of our neighbors. They go shooting on the property backing up to mine. I've already been informed that if I want to shoot, just ask. I've heard them out there a few times since last Thursday. If there was shooting in my last neighborhood, it was time to duck.

Please add ~20-30 minutes to the grocery and "quick" trips to the store. I'm in west tennessee, but the results are the same. You see someone you know or someone you've run across before (even just once) be prepared to spend some time shooting the shit.

It's just part of it. Welcome to the state!

Welcome, I'm in Johnson City and my NG Unit is in Greeneville. Wideners does let you pick stuff up in store, you just have to buy it online and put local pickup in the comments box. They will call you when it is ready and they have limited times/days you can pick it up. There is a pretty decent place for reloading stuff in Greeneville too www.etaf.biz.
