 Ammo through Canada question

I've got a friend that is driving up to AK in the early spring. I want to get them to bring up some ammo for me. I read on the Canadian website that you are allowed up to 5000 rounds. My question is do you have to buy a permit or is it a freebie? I couldn't find anything on the site that said one way or another. Thanks for any help!

Did they change the allowed amount? A couple years ago I could only bring 500 rounds, 4k primers and 8kilos of powder.

From what i saw, the primers are considered a "round" of ammo. So you technically brought 4500 rounds of ammo up. Don't know about the powder. I really know nothing and am just going on what I saw on a Canadian .gov site when researching.

Did you have to buy a permit for the ammo and primers?

When I drove through in 2010 I brought 5K rounds with no problem. I printed out a copy of the customs page and had it with me just in case I got a new boarder patrol agent. But I was never even asked if I had ammo, and I didn't volunteer the info at the boarder.

Never volunteer information.

And never, ever try joking around...

An acquaintance of mine was moving to the lower 48 with his wife. On this trip he had a couple of handguns (very wrong thing to do). He had hidden them and hoped they would not search his vehicle. They spotted a couple of holsters. When they asked if he had guns his wife said "Oh, he has lots of guns!". They then asked to see them whereupon she replied "They are all at home.". They replied "Prove it.". Long story short they found the handguns and gave him a choice of turn around or give up the guns. He was already committed to this trip so he chose option #2. They confiscated the guns but let him through (after searching all his stuff). He was highly pissed at his wife opening her mouth and then losing the guns.

My take: He was a dumbass for even trying and at the least should have told his wife to not mention anything gun. I would never even attempt to do what he did.

They can go through all your stuff, even disassemble your vehicle down to the nuts and bolts. They are not required to put anything back together. Never fuck with border crossing guards (or the person serving you your food). I have even seen signs at airports that at the security checkpoints that said "Humor is not allowed" and a sign on the other side that said "Humor may resume".

When I was leaving Alaska and moving to the lower 48 the Canadian Border Patrol/Customs folks asked me why, and I explained that I'm in the military and getting a new assignment. So they asked if me if I owned any firearms (guess they assumed all males in the military own firearms). I'm not one to lie to them so I said yes I own some, but they aren't with me. They made me "prove" I didn't have my firearms on me ––thank goodness I had the paperwork from the movers with the serial numbers, thus showing that they had possession of my firearms (and not me). They were pretty ready to search all of my belongings.

I have nothing against the country of Canada, I have family that is Canadian and I love going to visit. But some of their Border Patrol/Customs types are pretty bad. Same goes for some members of the US Border Patrol/Customs folks as well.

The border agents in Sweetgrass MT were fucking assholes. They searched everything in my truck, engine bay, washer tank, shined the lights inside me doors looking for a beretta frame, since i had a Ciener Beretta .22 conversion (which apparently is a firearm in CA). They said give it up or turn around and mail it to an FFL . I turned around and mailed it to myself. They went ape shit when they "found" some magazines from CDNN (yes the paper mags they send through the mail) and asked me to explain having them. They threatened imprisonment and not being allowed back into Canada for X amount of years if i was caught lieing. It kinda ruined the rest of the trip up for me. The only saving part was when she found a bleach bottle that i was using as a piss bottle that i just forgot to toss out. The cute lil blond agent opens it up and takes a big whiff. I almost fell off my chair laughing.
